New trailer for ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ to premiere on TV, online next week

star wars rogue one news and rumors version 1476290117
The Star Wars Celebration convention kicks off in London next week, but Star Wars fans on this side of the ocean will get a treat on Friday, July 15, when a new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premieres in the U.S.

A new, three-minute preview of the highly anticipated movie will debut during ABC’s broadcast of Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey, a documentary on last year’s blockbuster sequel that was also available on the DVD and Blu-ray editions of The Force Awakens. Although the trailer will likely find its way online before the show’s 8 p.m. ET/PT broadcast, fans will certainly want to set their DVRs and mark their calendars for the preview’s official premiere, just to be safe.

News of the trailer’s premiere arrives via Star Wars news site Making Star Wars, which posted screenshots of the documentary’s guide description that includes a mention of the Rogue One trailer. However, with the film’s official panel scheduled for earlier that day in London, the trailer is likely to premiere during that event, then find its way online — either officially or unofficially — after the panel.

Directed by Monsters and Godzilla filmmaker Gareth Edwards, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set in the period between the events of prequel film Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and the franchise-spawning 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. The film follows the group of rebel agents tasked with stealing the plans to the Death Star.

Oscar-nominated The Theory of Everything actress Felicity Jones stars as the resourceful rebel Jyn Erso. She’s joined in the cast by Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler). Firefly actor Alan Tudyk provides the motion-capture performance for the robot K-2SO.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story features a script penned by About a Boy and The Golden Compass screenwriter Chris Weitz, based on a story conceived by Star Wars franchise veteran John Knoll (who also serves as an executive producer on the film) and The Book of Eli and The Walking Dead: The Game writer Gary Whitta. Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech) will provide the film’s score.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is scheduled to hit theaters December 16.

Beyond The Bad Batch: what’s next for Star Wars animated shows
The members of Clone Force 99 in promo art for Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2.

The Star Wars universe continues to expand its galaxy far, far away on Disney+ with supplemental content like the animated show The Bad Batch. Season 2 has just premiered on the streamer, continuing the intimately scaled and daring missions of the titular band of veterans formerly known as Clone Force 99.

The show has proven to be promising so far. Still, other animated works under the Star Wars corner of Disney have given fans a taste of how versatile it can be both conceptually and artistically. Visions was an anime spin on the mega-franchise, providing stylistically distinct approaches to it in a sort of "what if?" narrative format. This would be an exciting template for exploring the Legends continuity stories -- formerly known as the Expanded Universe -- that captivated so many longtime fans.

We all cherish the times we thrilled, chilled, and gasped through the saga's epic sacrifices, tragic losses, and shocking revelations. To honor these moments, we present a definitive ranking of the biggest, boldest, and most operatic moments from the Star Wars feature films.

With the Star Wars series Andor, Diego Luna finally steps into the spotlight
Diego Luna looks behind him while walking down a street in a scene from Andor.

Diego Luna is a star, or at least, he should be one. The 42-year-old Mexican is one of the most recognizable Latino talents in Hollywood, a consistently reliable working actor who delivers good and often great performances when given the chance. Luna has been in Hollywood for nearly twenty years, mainly playing supporting roles, and is finally stepping into the franchise spotlight with Tony Gilroy's slow-burn space adventure Andor, the latest entry in the ever-expanding Star Wars universe. Andor, where he also serves as an executive producer, provides Luna with his first starring role since Netflix's Narcos and represents his first chance to lead a major franchise since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Reviews for Andor have been positive, with critics praising its slow approach and declaring it a breath of fresh air amid the increasingly formulaic projects that the Star Wars/Disney machine keeps churning out yearly. On a more personal level, Andor represents Luna's chance to step up and prove he can carry a big-name IP on his back. Easier said than done, especially with a property like Star Wars, infamous for breaking many actors' rising careers and having one of the most divided and openly confrontational fanbases. But Hollywood is experiencing a pivotal moment for inclusivity and support for Latino talent. And with Andor already renewed for a second season and critics and audiences rooting up for him, Luna has the chance to enter the next stage of his career. In his case, it truly is now or never.
From Mexico with love
