The trailer first sets up the story: A government agency, led by Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis), recruits a group of imprisoned supervillains to take on dangerous missions in exchange for clemency. We see the ragtag gang gleefully pick up their weapons and be given the rules, but then, it’s onto the action. “Let’s play,” says Deadshot (Will Smith) as a montage of combat scenes begins.
The group has varied skills, from swinging swords and baseball bats to shooting bullets and fire. In the midst of it, The Joker shows up as his unique self. “All of that chitchat’s gonna get you hurt,” he says at one point. We also see him taking off his jacket, and then later stretching with all of his chest tattoos visible.
Like the most recent trailer, the new video mixes in plenty of lighthearted moments. They’re ones we’ve seen before, though, including all of the men coming to a standstill as Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) changes shirts, her forewarning that she’s “known to be quite vexing,” and El Diablo (played by Jay Hernandez) deciding to stick to water at the bar. There may be a limit of funny scenes to use given that there had to be reshoots to make the film more fun.
Directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad also stars Jai Courtney, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach, Karen Fukuhara, Ike Barinholtz, and Common. The film hits theaters on August 5.
