Heart Machine’s crowdfunded action-RPG Hyper Light Drifter will premiere for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 by the end of July, its creators confirmed with Gematsu this week.
Hyper Light Drifter‘s upcoming console debut follows up on its initial release for Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms in March, and ports for the Wii U and PlayStation Vita are also in the works.
Inspired by 16-bit adventure games from the 1990s, Hyper Light Drifter is an overhead-view action game in which players traverse a mysterious land in search of a cure for the main character’s debilitating illness. As they explore Hyper Light Drifter‘s colorful world, players will encounter deadly creatures and puzzles that require shifts in perspective to solve. The game also boasts upgradable weapons and abilities, and its storyline branches throughout depending on actions taken during the adventure.
Hyper Light Drifter was initially unveiled via Kickstarter, where it earned over $645,000 in backer pledges despite setting a modest funding goal of $27,000. Heart Machine’s fundraising campaign successfully funded the creation of console ports and physical special editions, along with a variety of in-game bonuses.
In addition to upcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4 ports, Hyper Light Drifter is also coming to the Wii U and PlayStation Vita. Heart Machine recently admitted that the Vita has proven to be “a more difficult platform [to develop for], due to its limited processing power and memory.” The studio estimates a fall release for the Vita version of Hyper Light Drifter, while details regarding a planned Wii U release will be shared in August.
Hyper Light Drifter launches digitally for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on July 26. A physical Collector’s Edition of Hyper Light Drifter, which includes a digital copy of the game, a replica Super NES cartridge, a 24-page manual, and a world map poster, is currently up for pre-order via iam8bit. Physical editions will begin shipping in “late summer.”
