Get free calls, texts, and data from T-Mobile if you're headed to Rio for the Olympics

Guide to watching the Olympics online
The Summer Olympics are just around the corner, and for an event that only happens every four years, T-Mobile is pulling out all the stops. On Thursday, the Un-carrier announced that it would grant customers “free unlimited high-speed data throughout Brazil” starting August 1, so those who are making the trek to Rio will be able to capture and share every moment of their vacation with their smartphones. Moreover, T-Mobile says, “calls within Brazil and back home to the U.S. are free — as is texting worldwide.”

“AT&T is spending millions to put their logo all over the games as the official sponsor. They introduced a new ‘Brazil plan’ last month, so their customers can foot the bill for AT&T’s VIP parties and private suites in Rio,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “That couldn’t be more different from the Un-carrier. T-Mobile is freeing customers to travel to the Rio Games and use their phones without worry.”

While most cell service providers impose a cost associated with these types of promotions, T-Mobile promises that the Brazil deal is 100-percent free — you’ll get it automatically as soon as you land in Rio.

Moreover, as a reward for being related to some of the world’s greatest athletes, families of U.S. Olympic competitors will receive free T-Mobile service and a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung Gear 360 camera through October, because you’re definitely going to want to take pictures of your cousin in the pool (both Olympic-sized and the one in your hotel, right?).

“If a member of your family qualifies for the biggest global sporting event on the planet, your damn phone bill is the last thing you want to worry about,” said Legere. “We’re going to make it simple for our customers — and families of the U.S. team — to enjoy the games, stay connected and share every historic moment with those they care about.”

Miss unlimited Google Photos storage? T-Mobile has a deal for you
T-Mobile smartphone.

Data storage has become something of a major issue as people begin filling up internal and external storage drives with photos, documents, and videos. Now, T-Mobile's latest partnership with Google aims to fix the problem with a single deal. The mobile company is introducing a new tier of storage plan that gives customers the 2TB of storage included with its previous tiers, as well as unlimited space for photos and videos in Google Photos.

The deal isn't live just yet but will be available on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, to all T-Mobile customers. It will be the most expensive storage plan priced at $15 per month, but includes everything and more from the cheaper plans such as full-resolution photo storage, photo-editing tools, VPN services, and extended trials for multiple Google services like YouTube Premium and Google Stadia.

T-Mobile says Scam Shield has blocked 21 billion scam calls in 2021
woman on phone.

T-Mobile's scam call screening service, Scam Shield, was officially launched in July 2020, and in its first full year of operation, Scam Shield has blocked a mind-boggling 21 billion scam calls, according to T-Mobile’s 2021 Scam and Robocall Report.
Scam callers take holidays, weekends off
The report offers some insights into the state of the scam call business. Social Security phishing scams, once the most common type of scam call, comprised only 11% of scam call volume. Fake vehicle warranty renewals were the most common type, accounting for 51% of all scam calls. These scams often include information about your vehicle to make them seem more legitimate, according to a Federal Communications Commission consumer report.

If scam calls seem like they’re out of control, the time of year may have something to do with that. According to T-Mobile, the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas have the highest volume of scam calls, but call volume drops sharply after December 23. In addition to taking holidays, scam callers also take weekends off, leading to an 85% drop in call volume.

If you still hate mobile games in 2021, you’re not playing enough of them
A town square diorama in Fantasian.

It's 2021 and I can’t believe we’re still dunking on mobile games.

For more than a decade, mobile games have been something of an industry laughing stock in the eyes of self-proclaimed “hardcore” gamers. They’ve long had a reputation for being simplistic cash grabs that prey on players through seedy microtransactions and overly addictive gameplay. Those criticisms aren’t unfounded; there’s certainly some sinister undertones in seemingly harmless games like Candy Crush. But mobile games aren’t just Candy Crush -- and they haven’t been for years now.
