‘Wonder Woman’ trailer, ‘Justice League’ footage debut at Comic-Con

Comic-Con International wrapped up in San Diego over the weekend, but not before some major movie news and previews were released to eager fans. As usual, superhero movie studios Warner Bros. Pictures and Marvel Studios competed to make the biggest impression on the Comic-Con crowds, and their efforts yielded some exciting sneak peeks at some of the most-anticipated movies on tap over the next few years.

On the Warner Bros. side of things, the studio’s Hall H panel featured the debut of the first full-length trailer for Wonder Woman, as well as some of the very first footage from superhero team-up movie Justice League.

Directed by Monster filmmaker Patty Jenkins from a script penned by Pan screenwriter Jason Fuchs, Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) as the popular DC Comics character, an Amazon princess with tremendous power who leaves her home to explore the world and becomes one of its greatest heroes.

Along with Gadot, the film’s cast includes Star Trek actor Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Wonder Woman’s love interest, as well as Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Exodus: Gods and Kings), Saïd Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), and Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead). Wonder Woman is scheduled to arrive in theaters June 2, 2017.

Wonder Woman also appears in the Comic-Con preview of Justice League, which features DC Comics heroes Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman for a team-up event set after the events of Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Directed by Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice filmmaker Zack Snyder, Justice League is based on a script by Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio.

Set to star Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman (who doesn’t appear in the Justice League footage), and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Justice League will also feature Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. They’re joined by Amber Heard, who will portray the Atlantean Queen Mera, as well as Willem Dafoe as Vulko and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon.

Justice League is scheduled to hit theaters November 17, 2017.

The best San Diego Comic-Con movie trailer debuts ever
'Justice League' reshoots rumored to change cliffhanger ending

Perhaps no single event on the annual calendar is more closely associated with trailer drops than San Diego Comic-Con. As it has become more and more prominent, Comic-Con has become known for teases for all things adjacent to nerd culture, including fantasy films, sci-fi TV shows, and even the occasional video game.

Now it's true that, in the end, trailers are often just pieces of marketing. They're designed to get you excited about projects that may not ultimately be as good as the advertising for them would make them seem. Even so, being excited about new things is one of the great joys of being alive, and that's doubly true when it comes to those looking forward to whatever is coming down the pike in the nerdiest corners of pop culture. These are the best trailers to ever debut at Comic-Con because sometimes looking forward to a thing is better than the thing itself.

Samoa Joe as Sweet Tooth in Twisted Metal.

This year's San Diego Comic-Con won't have a lot of star power, but that didn't stop Peacock from promoting two of its most-anticipated original series, Twisted Metal and The Continental. And it all starts with a little bit of ice cream from Twisted Metal's evil clown, Sweet Tooth.

On Thursday, July 20, Peacock and Sony Pictures Television will send Sweet Tooth's infamous ice cream truck to the corner of J Street and First Ave. Fans are invited to stop by for a free serving of an exclusive Twisted Metal ice cream flavor created by Salt & Straw. At 5 p.m., there will be a "surprise musical performance" at the ice cream truck. Fans who aren't able to make it out to the ice cream truck will be able buy some Twisted Metal ice cream of their own from three of the local Salt & Straw locations.
