'Doctor Strange' violates laws of physics, meets the Ancient One in new trailer

Don’t let the cape fool you: Doctor Strange isn’t your garden-variety superhero and, based on the latest trailer, Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange won’t be your typical superhero film.

The film’s latest spot made its debut at Comic-Con International in San Diego over the weekend, and it dives deep into the trippy, time-and-space-bending occult powers that its eponymous hero possesses, while revealing more of the character’s backstory.

You can watch the entire trailer above, which is chock-full of new footage. As you might have expected, the known laws of physics are violated frequently and beautifully (see: New York City folding up like oragami), but there are a few other interesting takeaways. We get to see (and hear) more of Mads Mikkelsen’s villainous Kaecilius this time around, we get a closer look at the relationship between Strange and the mysterious Ancient One, and the trailer ends with a very clever joke. Apparently, even folks with mystical powers still have use for the magic of the internet — they’re not savages, after all.

The spot runs about 2:21, making it a bit longer and meatier than the first official trailer, which debuted in April. As per ScreenCrush, a new poster (below) and a short clip from the film also debuted at Comic-Con. In the new footage, Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) meets Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One for the first time.

Apart from those mentioned above, Doctor Strange stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Benedict Wong (The Martian), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight, Mean Girls), Michael Stuhlbarg (Pawn Sacrifice), Scott Adkins (The Bourne Ultimatum), and Amy Landecker (Transparent). The film is due out in theaters November 4.

Dr. Strange chases dreams in new Multiverse of Madness trailer
Doctor Strange looking to the distance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

It has been nearly six years since Doctor Strange hit theaters, but Stephen Strange has been pretty busy in the MCU. Between memorable appearances in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, it's been impossible to forget about him. In exactly one month, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will arrive in theaters with a fresh batch of trouble for Stephen. And if the new teaser trailer is any indication, Strange's problems may literally be of his own making.

In the latest clips, Strange's feelings for Christine Palmer come to the forefront. Strange lost her love in the first movie long before he became a powerful sorcerer. Strange ultimately choose the path of magic over a life with Christine, and she moved on with someone else. Yet Strange can't stop dreaming about what might have been. And in the multiverse, all things are possible.

You may not have realized it, but today is the day that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was supposed to come out. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until May to see the good doctor for the first time since Spider-Man: No Way Home. And if Strange thought he had it bad in that story, wait until he sees what awaits him in the multiverse.

Perhaps to help ease the additional wait, Marvel Studios has released four new high-quality pictures from the Doctor Strange sequel. First up is none other than Doctor Stephen Strange himself, as portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Marvel debuts trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Stephen Strange issued a stark warning: “The Multiverse is a concept about which we know frighteningly little." Now, the price of Strange's folly comes due in the newly released trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And the good doctor is way out of his depth as the consequences of his arrogance come back to haunt him. Strange truly believed that he could escape unscathed. However, his misguided notion may have far-reaching implications for the MCU.

Benedict Cumberbatch, of course, returns as Strange, and there's a reason he approaches Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff shortly after the events of WandaVision. The newly crowned Scarlet Witch believes that Strange is there to punish her for what she did in Westview. And while Strange is fully aware that Wanda's power turned that town into a TV wasteland, he's not concerned about that. Instead, he needs Wanda's help as he faces the danger ahead.
