PlayStation Vue is targeting sports fans with the addition of NFL Network

Cutting the cord is easier than ever for a lot of people, but for sports fans the options can be somewhat more limited. For football fans, however, the transition away from traditional pay TV is about to get a little bit easier.

Both the NFL Network and NFL RedZone are coming soon to Sony’s PlayStation Vue internet TV service, the company announced in a blog post on Monday. It isn’t yet clear if the channels will be available as part of an existing programming package or as a separate add-on, but until now most of the service’s sports channels have been available in the Elite package, which starts at $45 per month.

No official date has been set for when the plans will be available, but the blog post states that the channels will arrive in time for the regular NFL season this fall. Subscribers with the channels will not only be able to view them via PS Vue, but also through the NFL Mobile app for Windows, iOS, and Android, as well as the NFL.com website.

The addition of the NFL Network will bring not only Thursday Night Football, but NFL GameDay Morning, A Football Life, and Timeline, as well as news and other NFL coverage. Meanwhile, RedZone offers game-changing plays and highlights from across the league on Sunday afternoons.

This is a big grab for Sony, as Sling TV doesn’t offer either channel, nor does its parent company, Dish Network. In June, Dish customers lost access to the NFL Network and RedZone when negotiations between Dish and the NFL broke down. So far, the two parties haven’t been able to agree on terms, leaving little hope for Sling TV customers with football season fast approaching.

One area where both PlayStation Vue and Sling TV fall short is local programming, with limited options for both services. Earlier this month, Sony added CBS local broadcast stations in nine new cities: Austin, Texas; Charlotte, North Carolina; Cincinnati; Cleveland; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Salt Lake City; San Diego; and West Palm Beach, Florida.

Here's how you can watch today's stream and what to realistically expect from it.
When is the PlayStation Showcase stream?
This week's PlayStation Showcase will air at 1 p.m. PT today. According to an announcement for the event on the PS Blog, the showcase will last around 40 minutes and include a post-show with updates from developers featured during the Showcase.

What to expect from the PlayStation Showcase?
While an announcement post for the PlayStation Showcase stream lays out (albeit vaguely) what viewers can expect, Sony's recent announcements for PlayStation could give us some specifics. The stream will "include updates from PlayStation Studios and some of the industry's most imaginative developers, for games releasing this holiday and beyond." However, the post explicitly notes that the next-gen iteration of PlayStation VR won't be present at the show.

Hitman 2, Overcooked, and Predator coming to PlayStation Plus

PlayStation just announced the new titles to come to PlayStation Plus for September. It's a particularly strong month for subscribers, as the lineup features two critically well-received games in Hitman 2 and Overcooked: All You Can Eat!

Hitman is having a banner year thanks to Hitman 3, and PS Plus subscribers are getting a taste of the series. Hitman 2 will be available to download starting on September 7. The stealth game takes everything that made the original Hitman a standout and expands on it. It's a good entry point for newcomers to the series from a gameplay standpoint.

Apex Legends and Rainbow Six Siege are coming to PlayStation Open Series

Apex Legends and Rainbow Six Siege are joining the PlayStation Tournaments: Open Series group of games. In a tweet and accompanying blog post, Sony announced the two games' arrival with the intent of "expanding the FPS competition genre" via the PlayStation Tournaments feature. Apex Legends will be available for competition starting on Wednesday, September 1, while Rainbow Six Siege will arrive on Thursday, September 2.

PlayStation Tournaments: Open Series is a way for players to engage in low-stakes competitions with friends and win prizes. Anyone who is an active PlayStation Plus subscriber can participate as long as they register beforehand. While professional esports include only the very best players in a given game, the Open Series is a way for the everyday player to get a taste of pro gaming glory.
