We may not be able to entirely trade lives with others — yet. But houses? That’s a whole different story. For all those times that you’ve wanted a change of scenery, you can now get one in a pretty major way — by swapping houses. Meet Love Home Swap, the first home-swapping app that promises to “change the game in the alternative travel sector.”

With this app (for iOS), you’ll be able to browse more than 95,000 homes from the comfort of your own, and use associated search and matching tools to help you find the house you want to escape to for your holiday. With homes in 190 countries, no matter what your destination, chances are there’s a family waiting to trade you.

To get started, simply register — it’s free — and put your own home on the marketplace, all of which you can do from your phone. From there, you’ll be able to chat with other Love Home Swap members, and exchange details about your dream vacation. And don’t worry — if someone falls in love with your home and you’re not jazzed about staying in theirs, that’s OK. Swaps don’t have to be one-to-one, nor do they have to happen at the same time. After all, this is your vacation — you should stay where you want, when you want, right?

“We have created the world’s first home-swapping app to bring the sector into the 21st century. Mobile makes up more than 50 percent of our traffic, so this is a major move to give our members what they want from us,” said Debbie Wosskow, CEO of Love Home Swap. “Having an app makes it easy for people to find their way to a swap whilst on the move, giving instant access to thousands of beautiful properties we have listed around the world.”

Being a part of the swapping community is free for the first two weeks, and then $20 a month. Learn more about the logistics of trading lives (sort of) on the Love Home Swap site.

WhatsApp now lets you make voice and video calls from your computer
WhatsApp messaging app

WhatsApp is now rolling out voice and video calling to desktop users, the company announced today. The messaging service, used by over a billion people worldwide, is improving the feature set of its desktop apps to match both its Facebook Messenger counterpart, as well as rivals from Apple's FaceTime and Microsoft's Skype.

WhatsApp says it is making this change due to a growth in voice and video calling that has happened over the past year. Due to the ongoing pandemic, a mix of social isolation, and lockdowns, more and more people have used the app to stay in touch in place of face-to-face communication. WhatsApp says this has reflected in "significant" growth, citing 1.4 billion voice and video calls made on New Year's Eve alone.

Home Design Feature

Planning a new home or redecoration is an exercise in mental image projection: How will that sofa, armoire, or easy chair actually fit into your real space? Will colors clash? Will the new item look mismatched? Will it take up more room than the measurements imply and dominate the room? The optical illusion of complementary colors, size, and style often persists until you've taken the plunge and that particular item lands in your living room, kitchen, or bedroom.

Home design apps, especially ones that employ some kind of 3D, augmented reality (AR), or virtual reality (VR) to simulate your environment, can help avoid rookie mistakes and alleviate the anxiety of a large purchase by giving you another way to envision and double-check how a new piece will fit into your current decor. Here are a few of the best ones we've found.
