Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 5,658 cars from the 2016 model year because of a problem with back seat child locks, according to Edmunds.
The problem, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is the child locks can become unlocked under certain conditions. The lock disengagement occurs due to vibration, even vibration from opening and closing a vehicle door. If the rear child door locks unlock, a child sitting in the back could unlock them. If a child is unrestrained and unexpectedly opens a door, they could potentially fall out.
No injuries have occurred because of the locks, Volkswagen’s Mark Gillies told Edmunds. Volkswagen told the NHTSA a quality control inspector discovered the problem during a routine inspection.
The recall affects Volkswagen CCs manufactured from January 12 to February 3, 2016; Golf R and Tiguans made from November 25, 2015, to January 28, 2016; and e-Golfs manufactured from November 25, 2015, to January 11, 2016.
According to the NHTSA, Volkswagen will notify owners to bring the cars into the nearest dealer. Dealers will inspect the locks and, if necessary, replace them at no charge. The notification schedule has not yet been determined. Owners with questions who wish to contact Volkswagen customer service directly can call 1-800-893-5298. The VW recall number is 58C9.
