Basis recalls every Peak fitness tracker ever sold after some users sustain burns

Fitness-tracking company Basis is recalling every Peak tracker it ever sold. Why? Because of a few cases of overheating that reportedly caused burns to some users.

The voluntary recall was announced in an email to users Wednesday, and will include a refund to all those who purchased the Peak. The recall comes after Basis found that it was unable to fix the issue through software tweaks.

“Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we aren’t able to develop such a solution without completely compromising the user experience,” said the company in its email. “As a result, we are asking that you return your Basis Peak watch and authorized accessories for a full refund at your earliest convenience. This was a tough decision, but your safety is our top priority.”

Basis first confirmed the issue in June when users started reporting that the Peak tracker was causing ‘discomfort, blistering, or burns’ to the wrist. To try and get around the issue, the company recommended not wearing the device and not charging it through the charging cradle. Some users actually reported that the charging cradle was overheating and even melting.

The news is somewhat disappointing. Even if you’re in love with your Peak tracker and refuse to send it back, syncing with the device will no longer be supported after December 31 of this year. Thankfully, the company does seem to be going out of its way to try and make things better — it will even refund accessories for the Peak trackers, including bands and extra charging cradles.

Of course, this isn’t the first time a wearable company has had to issue a major recall. Fitbit had to issue a recall after users complained of skin irritation from the rubber band back in early 2014.

People with diabetes will have an easier time getting insulin into their bodies with just one tap on their phone. The Food and Drug Administration has cleared the first-ever smartphone app developed by Tandem Diabetes Care to program insulin dosage for its t:slim X2 insulin pump users.

Tandem Diabetes Care, a leading insulin delivery and diabetes technology company, based in California, made the historic announcement on Wednesday, saying that its app is the first app for both Android and iOS capable of delivering insulin from a smartphone. Insulin delivery previously had to be conducted from the pump alone.

Circular confirms its $259 smart ring is coming to the U.S.

The Circular smart ring is finally going to be available for pre-order on Sunday, February 27, via the Circular website and will cost $259. The wearable tech will be available for presale in European countries (France, Germany, the U.K., and Italy,) the United States, Australia, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Pre-orders will go live at 1:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 27. Those who pre-order the smart ring should expect delivery between April and June 2022, according to a Circular press release.

Circular doesn't clarify what ring sizes will be available when presales go live, however, the company has said that seven sizes for both men and women will be available. Digital Trends has reached out for clarification on the available sizes, and will update this article when we hear back. The Circular smart ring also comes in four different colors that can be switched out with replaceable outer shells: Black, rose gold, silver, and gold.
