Sony's latest 18-110mm video lens is what your indie film needs

Sony’s newest E-mount lens, the E PZ 18-110mm F4 G OSS (SELP18110G), is designed specifically for enthusiast and pro video shooters, and combines a versatile zoom range of 18-110mm with a constant maximum aperture of f/4. Designed primarily for the company’s high-end Super 35mm video cameras like the FS5 and FS7, it is also compatible with E-mount mirrorless cameras like the full-frame A7-series and APS-C A6300. The lens should be particularly attractive to documentary filmmakers or anyone working on a run-and-gun-style production.

The 18-110mm lens has a relatively compact and lightweight design that weighs just two pounds. With the needs of the professional filmmaker in mind, it is dust and weather sealed and uses dedicated control rings for focus, zoom, and iris (aperture). The focus ring has a 0.8mm gearing compatible with standard follow-focus accessories.

In video, smooth zooming is incredibly important, which is why the 18-110mm includes a servo zoom function. Of course, zoom can be controlled fully manually if preferred. The zoom ring direction can also be reversed with the flip of a switch to meet the preferences of the user.

As a G-series lens, the 18-110mm should offer high optical performance suitable for 4K video, and the optical design uses six aspherical and three ED elements. It also incorporates Sony’s Smooth Motion Optics (SMO) technology, which limits focus breathing when zooming and keeps the lens to its same length regardless of zoom position. Optical SteadyShot (OSS) rounds out the feature set and provides for stable handheld shooting.

At $3,500, the lens is clearly targeting experienced videographers, but it offers significant value for that crowd. Save for ultra-low-light shooting or extreme shallow depth of field, it has the range and versatility to meet the needs of just about any situation. It also includes a detachable tripod collar and lens hood, and is fully compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters for even more reach.

The lens will be available this November.

Best microSD cards in 2023: top picks for your computer, camera, or drone
galaxy s8 tips and tricks

MicroSD cards are an unsung hero in the mobile space. They provide extra storage space for your smartphone, but they're also key in tablets, drones, and security cameras. Unfortunately, this feature is falling out of favor in the smartphone space, and most flagship and midrange phones no longer have a slot to insert a microSD card. Even the most expensive phones around, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Samsung S22 Ultra don't have a microSD card slot anymore. You're not even safe if you have an iPhone or iPad, as they've never had microSD card slots.

But all is not lost! Some of the best Android phones and best Android tablets do still support them, and they're still required for use with cameras, security cameras, and drones. But no matter which device you're buying it for, you'll want to get your hands on a microSD card from a reputable brand.
