PhotoFast iType-C is a handy storage extension for your iPhone

Apple really charges a premium for extra gigabytes of storage on the iPhone or iPad, so a lot of people end up opting for the lower storage models and then run out of room quite quickly. There are lots of different cloud services, but external flash drive storage for iOS devices is also growing more popular. The versatile PhotoFast iType-C is a new drive that comes in 64GB, 128GB, or 200GB varieties. It has an app to make organizing your files easy, and it will plug into just about anything.

A physical backup of all of your precious photos or files can be a good idea, and a drive that you can plug in to different devices for transferring them is really handy. You’ll find a Lightning connector at one end of the PhotoFast iType-C and a USB Type-C at the other end, ideal for transferring photos from an iPhone to a new MacBook. There’s also a small attachment that offers a USB 3.0 connector, and if you flip that up you have a Micro USB connector.

The PhotoFast iType-C is tiny, weighing only 17g, so it’s easy to stick in a bag or pocket and carry with you. The well-designed PhotoFast One App that goes along with it let’s you back up music, photos, videos, documents, and contacts. It’s also integrated with cloud services like Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and iCloud Drive and you can use it back up photo albums from Facebook and Instagram.

Another nice feature of the PhotoFast iType-C is the fact that you can plug it in and snap a shot on your iPhone that will save directly to the drive. Whether you want a backup for safety, extra storage to use for photos, or just a drive to stream movies from, the PhotoFast iType-C has you covered.

It is also Apple MFi-certified and it goes on sale at the end of the month. The prices are not finalized, but you should be able to pick up the 64GB version for around $60, the 128GB version will be around $100, and you’re looking at paying a fair bit more for the 200GB version.

The Lightning port is about to turn a decade old, but even so, it still finds a place in Apple's iPhones. It’s very strange, especially considering that numerous other Apple devices are USB-C powered already. While we have seen a plethora of leaks hinting towards the inclusion of USB-C on iPhone, it’s yet to come to fruition. That said, Apple will not be able to hold on to the Lightning port for too much longer.

A mandate from the European Union forces manufacturers to put USB-C ports on phones and other devices by 2024. Although the directive isn’t specifically aimed at Apple, it will be the most affected. Combine that with numerous reports claiming that Apple is testing USB-C iPhones, it's only a matter of time before all of this turns into a reality.

It’s official: iPhones will be required to have USB-C in 2024

After over a decade of debates and fierce corporate lobbying, the European Union has finally voted in favor of a standardization law that paves the way for a common charger and charging port on smartphones and tablets. The European Parliament, the European Council, and member nations have agreed upon legislation that aims to put a USB-C port on all smartphones and tablets sold in the EU region by 2024.

While this legislation affects all smartphones and tablets in the region, Apple is the brand that will have to have to shoulder the bulk of the policy implementation. The Tim Cook-led company has stuck with the proprietary Lightning port on iPhones for years, but the EU regulation will force it to put a USB-C port on iPhones by 2024 or leave the market. That means Apple smartphones slated to debut late in 2024 will have to ditch the Lightning port in favor of a USB-C outlet for charging and file transfer.
For Apple, it's a take it or leave it deal
Aside from smartphones and tablets, the amendment to the EU's Radio Equipment Directive covers a total of 15 categories, including audio wearables, cameras, e-readers, and video game consoles. Manufacturers have until the end of 2024 to adopt the USB-C standard on their devices and also agree to the standard charger policy. The legislation also extends to laptops, but brands have until the next 40 months to acclimatize to the changes prescribed for this category.

However, keep in mind that the increased charging speeds up to 15 watts work only with iPhone 12 and 13 ranges for now.
