It’ll soon be easier than ever to transfer data between PlayStation 4s

Sony wants to make it as simple as possible for users to swap out their PlayStation 4 systems when the PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Pro are released, and an upcoming update will help to ease the transition.

As part of the PlayStation 4 system software 4.00 release, which also will include folder capabilities and a UI refresh, Sony’s official site states that users will be able to to transfer your games, saved data, captured videos, screenshots, system settings, and more from a standard PS4 to a PS4 Pro using an Ethernet cable.

“This process will also work from standard PS4 to standard PS4, PS4 Pro to standard PS4, and PS4 Pro to PS4 Pro provided both units have system software update 4.00 or higher installed, and the same PSN account is signed into both systems,” an FAQ article about the PS4 Pro said.

The article also mentioned that users can log into PlayStation Network with their PS4 Pro, access their games and content library, and then re-download their previously purchased games or content. The saved data in online storage will also transfer.

The new method will surely save plenty of headaches from people who have tried to transfer data in the past, as the current process involves backing up the entire system to an external drive, and manually moving it to the new system. Downloading content through PlayStation Network is also an option, but of course unnecessarily complicated.

While there is no release date set for the 4.00 system update, there is a firmware update scheduled for next week, matching the launch date of the PS4 Slim on Sept. 15, which will add HDR support to current systems.

Sony has acquired the esports platform Repeat.gg, a site that hosts leaderboard tournaments and tracks player performance.

In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, Steven Roberts, Sony vice president of global competitive gaming said: "At PlayStation, our vision for esports has always been about breaking down barriers for gamers to compete at all levels."

Nintendo Switch lifetime sales beat PlayStation 4

The Nintendo Switch's versatility has made it the bestselling console for the last five years. It has sold so well, in fact, that it has surpassed the lifetime sales of the PS4, according to The NPD Group.

Mat Piscatella, executive director and gaming industry advisor for The NPD Group, tweeted the sales figures for the Switch on Friday. He points out that the Switch is now the fourth highest unit selling console in U.S, and the sixth highest selling console overall, coming behind just three other bestselling consoles of all time, the PS2, Xbox 360, and Wii, Nintendo's legacy console. He also said that the Switch sold more units than any other console last month and outpaced Xbox Series X/S year-to-date.

I was thrilled when I learned that one of PSVR’s best games, Moss, was getting a sequel. Moss: Book 2 launched on March 31, continuing the adventures of the game’s adorable mouse hero. I was eager to dive in, but I was less excited by the hoops I’d need to go through to accomplish it. Namely, it would mean dusting off my PS VR.

After setting up my headset for the first time in well over a year -- and making a mess of my entertainment center in the process -- the PlayStation VR2 can’t come soon enough. It feels like a waste to play great games on a headset that’s about to become obsolete.
A long, long setup
If you’ve never set up a PS VR before, you might be surprised by how complicated the process is. The headset, which launched in 2016, was already a bit of a mess to hook up at the time. The convoluted setup only sticks out more than six years later, especially next to something as elegant as the Meta Quest 2.
