New ‘Dreams’ trailer for HBO’s ‘Westworld’ series is the stuff of nightmares

There’s a new trailer for HBO’s upcoming Westworld series, and it’s the stuff of nightmares in so many ways.

Titled “Dreams,” the latest trailer for the sci-fi series based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name explores how the android inhabitants of the futuristic Wild West theme park interpret their existence — an existence that involves all manner of sex, violence, and disturbing activity. And from what the trailer suggests, the sins that surround them don’t go away when they close their eyes.

Executive produced, co-written, and directed by Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight, Interstellar), Westworld unfolds in and around a theme park populated by artificially intelligent robots whose primary directive is to indulge the desires of human guests, no matter how noble or depraved. When the android inhabitants of the park begin to question the nature of their existence, the lines between the brutal realities of the theme park and the outside human world begin to blur.

The series premieres next month with the first of 10 hourlong episodes. Its all-star cast includes Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins and four-time Academy Award nominee Ed Harris, as well as Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Jimmi Simpson, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Simon Quarterman, Angela Sarafyan, Luke Hemsworth, and Clifton Collins, Jr.

Westworld is co-written and executive produced by Lisa Joy Nolan (Burn Notice, Pushing Daisies), with J.J. Abrams also serving as an executive producer through his Bad Robot Productions studio.

The series has already encountered some controversy due to its graphic themes, with HBO pressured to address some of the intense sexual elements described in a consent form circulated by a third-party casting agency in September 2015.

Westworld is scheduled to premiere at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 2, on HBO.

10 best episodes from Batman: The Animated Series on HBO Max
The shadowy silhouette of Batman standing atop a building in Gotham City.

The Batman has spread its wings and success over to HBO Max, opening up the movie to another segment of the general audience. The movie was a critical and commercial success, though the streaming platform has plenty of other solid Batman content available. In many ways, the early- to mid-'90s cartoon Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS) set the gold standard for how high the brooding superhero should be aiming for in any on-screen project.

BTAS perfectly balances the inherently whimsical nature of comic books with thought-provoking noir nuance. These episodes of The Animated Series, and by extension its sequel series, The New Batman Adventures (TNBA), are some of the best Dark Knight tales fans will find readily available.

History remembers names in new House of the Dragon trailer
Matt Smith in House of the Dragon.

Have you ever wondered why there were so few female rulers in HBO's Game of Thrones? It's the same reason why there aren't that many in this world. In the new trailer for the prequel series, House of the Dragon, King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) sets up what should be a peaceful transfer of power. The major houses of Westeros have all come to bend the knee and swear loyalty to Viserys and his chosen heir: His daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy). Everyone follows the script except one: Her uncle, Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith).

Most of the trailer seems to take place from Daemon's perspective, as he walks out of the throne room without supporting his niece or his brother. Instead of being shunned, he is cheered by his followers. Daemon is willing to let the kingdom slip into war just to satisfy his urge for power. And as warned in the trailer, history doesn't remember the blood spilled on the way to the throne. It remembers the names of those who claimed it.

Viola Davis may headline HBO Max’s Peacemaker spinoff series
Viola Davis as Amanda Waller in 2016's Suicide Squad

Earlier this year, Peacemaker was such a big hit for HBO Max that it earned an early second season renewal. Now, the Peacemaker spinoff series is coming into focus. Deadline is reporting that Viola Davis is in negotiations to executive produce and star in the currently untitled show. If Davis signs on, she will reprise her role as Amanda Waller from The Suicide Squad films.

In the DC Expanded Universe, Waller is the head of Task Force X, a secret government program that blackmails supervillains into going on suicide missions for their nation. That's where the Suicide Squad nickname comes from. Waller has also demonstrated a ruthless streak in the films, and a willingness to murder her operatives if they disobey her orders in the field. She's not an easy character to like, but Waller isn't evil. Instead, she's amoral, and she doesn't feel the need to adhere to any heroic ideals because she never claimed to be a hero.
