Xbox achievements get a new notification sound based on their ‘rarity’

The Xbox’s signature achievement “ping” sound has remained the same since it was first introduced with the release of the Xbox 360, but soon, it will be receiving a major update. That’s right — after more than a decade, a new achievement sound is coming to Xbox, but only if your achievement is worth boasting about.

Available now to a selection of Xbox Preview members, the new achievement sound is classy, elegant, and subtle. After unlocking a “rare” achievement, in addition to the standard unlock noise, you’ll also be greeted to a soft “twinkle.” A diamond displays on the left side of the notification to let you know you’ve unlocked a rare achievement, and similar to the trophy system on PlayStation, it will also show what percentage of players have managed to complete the same feat.

The classic Xbox One achievement sound has become so deeply ingrained in our collective subconscious that society might just break down with the introduction of the new noise. We recommend taking a few deep breaths the next time you unlock a rare achievement as you remind yourself that everything will be fine. Here’s the noise on its own, with less background audio.

The update also brings along a few other social features that should make playing with friends a bit easier. The “Looking For Group” feature already available in Preview now allows players to schedule their sessions up to a week in advance, which sounds especially useful in raiding situations with Destiny or The Division.

The new “Arena” feature is also available to Preview members today, initially with the free-to-play fighting game Killer Instinct. Arena lets players register for in-game tournaments on both Xbox One and Windows 10. During its initial Preview release, it will only be available in a stripped-down capacity to U.S. Xbox One users.

Following up on its Sky Cipher special edition Xbox Wireless Controller, Microsoft has announced a full series of transparent controllers now available for preorder.

The Cipher Series Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 comes in six different color options. The white Ghost Cipher is the most transparent-looking, but there are also Velocity Cipher, Astral Cipher, Surf Cipher, Candy Cipher, and Pulse Cipher, which are Xbox green, purple, blue, pink, and red, respectively. You can mix and match D-pad, button, joystick, and trigger colors, and get your own in the Design Lab. A base model will cost $150, and be wary of any add-ons that might up the price more than you'd like.

As the fall season approaches, the number of high-profile Xbox Game Pass additions is rising. That said, the service also does a great job of appealing to players who are fans of more specific, niche genres. September 2024 has been particularly kind to Xbox Game Pass subscribers who are fans of simulation or strategy games that require a deeper level of engagement and dedication. These are the kinds of games I'm recommending to you this week, especially because one of them launches right into Microsoft's video game subscription service today.
Frostpunk 2

Later today, Frostpunk 2 will get its wide release on PC and be available to Game Pass subscribers. It is a more ambitious sequel to an enthralling yet stressful city-builder in which players try to survive in a harsh, snowy apocalypse. Frostpunk 2 increases the scale of things as players try to maintain the restored civilization they built from scratch in the first game. It exacerbates the already stressful nature of real-time city-builders but in a way that works perfectly in its postapocalyptic world. Frostpunk 2 is only available on PC, and you can play it there with a PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

Xbox Game Pass’ new Standard tier is missing some big games

Players are digging into Xbox Game Pass now that the company has officially launched its new Xbox Game Pass Standard tier. However, they've discovered that it's missing quite a few noteworthy titles, including some that were already on the service before Xbox switched to its new payment structure.

Xbox published a post on September 10 marking the move, and explaining its new Game Pass plans in a succinct manner. Want to just use your Xbox for multiplayer? Grab Game Pass Core. Just want games on your PC? Get PC Game Pass. Game Pass Standard, arguably the most confusing new tier of the bunch when it was announced back in July, is for people who want to "level up [their] Xbox console gaming experience at a great value." It costs $15 per month compared to Ultimate's $20 per month (up from $17).
