Soundcast returns with the new VG1 waterproof Bluetooth speaker

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a new product from Soundcast — 2013’s Melody was the last we saw from the company — but that’s because the company has had a quiet few years. Now Soundcast is returning with its first new product in three years, the VG1 Bluetooth speaker, which aims to provide high-quality audio in a waterproof design.

“We’ve spent a lot of time speaking with customers and studying this competitive market, and identified a need for a waterproof speaker that doesn’t sacrifice sound quality,” Soundcast vice president of sales and marketing Charity Hardwick said in a statement. “Applying Soundcast’s years of experience in design and engineering, we’ve created a beautiful and rugged portable high definition Bluetooth speaker that will be truly appreciated by the discerning ear.”

Soundcast uses the term “high-definition sound” when referring to the VG1, and it’s tough to say what exactly that is, though the speaker does make use of DSP, presumably to improve audio quality. The VG1 packs 2-inch aluminum drivers and a rear-firing bass radiator, which the company says can power an indoor gathering or outdoor pool party equally well.

The VG1 features Auto Bluetooth functionality, allowing up to two units to be easily paired for even bigger sound. The speaker can work with Siri for hands-free operation, and features a built-in microphone for speakerphone functionality. Battery life is stated as up to 15 hours, more than enough to power through even the longest-lasting parties.

In terms of the build, the speaker looks fairly tough, but doesn’t commit fully to this, which is a good thing, since some rugged Bluetooth speakers end up looking like they belong on a construction site instead of by the pool. Despite the rugged built, the VG1 is still fairly light, weighing in at one pound.

The VG1 will make it’s official debut next week at the International Pool, Spa and Patio Expo in New Orleans. If you’d rather bring it home, the speaker will sell for $150, and can be pre-ordered from the Soundcast website.

marshall emberton smallest bluetooth speaker bt featured

The personal audio arm of Marshall, a company best-known for its British-built guitar amps, has a new ultra-portable Bluetooth speaker: The $149 Emberton.

The tiny speaker looks like it's intended to be an electric guitar companion, thanks to the amp-inspired design cues that typifies the entire Marshall line. However, its ambitions are more modest. As an IPX7-rated device with a claimed 20-hour battery life, the Emberton is really just an ultra-stylish alternative to Bluetooth speakers like the JBL Flip 5
, Sony SRS-XB23
, and the Ultimate Ears Megaboom 3.
