Read all about it! Google Play Newsstand 4.0 brings major redesign, new features

Google Play Newsstand is getting a redesign. Version 4.0 of the app has begun rolling out to users, giving it both an all-new look, and a series of new features.

Perhaps the biggest change is the aforementioned redesign, which gets rid of the Highlights and Top News streams and replaces them with a series of personalized greetings and articles that you might find interesting. These fall under the title “Briefing.”

The Briefing section is really the new center of Play Newsstand, and it’ll show the top stories for any given moment, as well as top headlines for a number of different topics.

There are a number of other screens you can jump to as well. Sections include “For You,” “Library,” “Explore,” and “Read Later,” all of which are pretty much what they sound like. The Library screen, for example, is basically a reorganized version of the “My Library” section featured in the previous version of the app. A new tab called Topics & Sources is also there, which is where, once you scroll to the bottom of the screen, you’ll find your magazines.

Even the search bar got a few new features. The bar will now offer suggestions for possible searches, as well as landing pages for trending topics, magazines, and news sources.

In general, the new version of the app really seems like a step forward. It’s still a great place to get your news and latest headlines, but now there’s a big emphasis on the Briefing page. Some users suggest that the new interface is a little difficult to navigate, but it’s likely that over the next few months we’ll see little tweaks to how the app works that make the interface a little more seamless.

The updated app is rolling out now, so if you don’t have access to it just yet, you should in the near future.

Google ditches Play Movies app in favor of Google TV

The Google TV app is taking over for Play Movies & TV across all Android devices. When Google TV was introduced in late 2020, its mission to replace Play Movies & TV seemed like a good idea as the preinstalled app wasn't doing a lot to take users' attention away from other streaming apps. Google TV's addition to the Android ecosystem has been pretty gradual up to this point, but now it's set to be an essential part of the Android experience.

Play Movies & TV will be officially retired as the face of Android's streaming content store in favor of Google TV starting in May. At that point, buying content on Play Movies & TV will no longer be supported in the Play Store, Google announced earlier this week. Google TV will take Play Movies & TV's place as the preinstalled streaming app included by default on every Android device at that point.

The increased power of modern smartphones as gaming powerhouses has allowed for the creation of more sophisticated mobile games, many of which can easily be called “console-quality.” However, this has also given rise to more demand from players to be able to enjoy these gaming experiences on a larger screen.

Google Play Store removes info on apps’ most recent update

The Google Play Store has removed the ability for users to see when apps have been last updated. The feature is standard across most mobile app stores as it serves as a useful tool for mobile owners to stay informed about their software, but now Android users are being kept in the dark. Although other information such as file size and version number is still publicly available in the Google Play Store, the removal of the "last updated" feature in the UI has puzzled many users.

This change seems to have been a long time coming as Google tested the waters in November by removing the feature for select users, however, it was met with backlash from fans. Following the tests, the feature was brought back, and it seemed as if the Play Store was going back to normal for good, but as of now, the "last updated" section is gone for all Android users.
