Create a 3D model of your home in mere minutes with Canvas app for iOS

Anyone who has followed tech trends for some time will be familiar with the concept of “killer apps,” referring to those software applications which are so darn compelling that they give your average user a reason to go out and buy a particular piece of hardware.

With Canvas, augmented reality startup Occipital may just have found its own killer app.

Launched as a company back in 2013, Occipital made its name with the successful Kickstarter project Structure Sensor: a smart gadget that turned regular iPads into affordable 3D mapping and imaging devices.

Canvas improves on that functionality with an iOS app which lets users capture 3D scans of entire rooms in their (or other people’s) homes, complete with accurate measurements. It’s impressive stuff, and an application for the scanning technology that will no doubt sell it to a whole new group of would-be customers.

“When we first started, most of the applications people were using Stucture Sensor for were very object-centric,” Occipital product manager Alex Schiff told Digital Trends. “A lot of the use-cases were about scanning people, body parts, or furniture. This is bigger. Canvas allows anyone with an iPad and a structural sensor to create a 3D model of their home in minutes.”

Schiff said that the app provides users with one of their most-requested abilities. “Right from the start, we had emails from people wanting to use it for architecture, design, insurance — all sorts of different use-cases where having a scale-accurate 3D model of physical space is useful,” he continued.

The software promises to please everyone from regular users wanting to measure their apartment for furniture, through to professionals who can take advantage of the ability to convert scans into CAD formats.

The app itself is available as a free App Store download, although you’ll have to buy a $379 Structure Sensor to use it. Occipital is also offering an added wide-angle lens attachment which promises to improve motion tracking. You can get a bundle with both the $39 lens and the Structure Sensor for just $399.

Then you’re ready to getting measuring!

It’s time to update your iPhone and iPad to iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16
iPads with iPadOS 16.

Apple has launched iPadOS 16 for everyone. This software update is available for free to folks with a compatible iPad model and it brings some big changes to the Messages app, has new smart tools for collaboration, a fresh new iCloud Shared Photo Library, Stage Manager, a Weather app (gasp!), and more. On top of that, Apple is also launching iOS 16.1 for all compatible iPhone models as well, like the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.

In the Messages app, the big changes include the ability to edit, undo send, and mark entire conversations as unread. While the first two may not have been a universal must-have, marking conversations as unread has been something many people have clamored about for many years. Other new additions in Messages include SharePlay and collaboration on shared documents.

iPadOS 16 may not hit your iPad until October, says report
An iPad using Stage Manager in iPadOS 16.

Apple is placingiPadOS 16 on a rather unusual release schedule. Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that the company might delay the launch of the iPad's new software update by about a month, placing it in October.

Usually, Apple releases iPadOS updates at the same time as the iOS updates in September, and they would be pre-installed in new models of their respective devices. For example, iOS 16, which is in the public beta phase, is still slated to come out next month, and it'll be included in the iPhone 14. However, people with knowledge of the matter, who remained anonymous because deliberations were private, told Bloomberg that Apple will hold off on releasing iPadOS 16 until October.

You can finally move your WhatsApp chats from Android to iOS
WhatsApp and Telegram app icons.

Moving WhatsApp chats from Android to iOS has been a painful task for years. But not anymore, as Apple and WhatsApp have made the process a whole lot easier. Starting today, Apple is adding a feature that allows you to move chats between the two platforms. The feature is a part of Apple’s existing “Move to iOS” Android application. It’s worth noting that the feature is currently available for beta users only, so non-beta users might have to wait for a week or two as it's rolled out in phases.

This is a big move since 2 million people use WhatsApp and, until now, there wasn’t an official method to move conversations between Android and iOS. There have been third-party solutions here and there, but nothing officially backed by Apple or WhatsApp. With the feature becoming available, users will be able to move their chats swiftly from Android to iOS.
