“It’s been a long time coming, but I take great pleasure (and relief!) in knowing that The Last Guardian is in your hands,” Ueda wrote. “When we first began work on The Last Guardian, I intended it to take from and build on our experience working on Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, making it something akin to a greatest hits album. Unfortunately, as you know, we ran into a few twists and turns along the way, and the title took longer than expected.”
The Last Guardian was originally planned as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, having been announced a few years after the console’s launch, but technical issues hampered its development for years. When the PlayStation 4 released, the game was given new life, and after suffering only one more — very minor — delay, it is now scheduled to arrive next week.
“As you play, take the time to stop and enjoy the scenery as you follow these unlikely companions on their journey. And you definitely won’t want to miss the ending!” Ueda continued. “The development team and I hope you all have a wonderful time with The Last Guardian. Nothing would make us happier.”
As the great beast Trico’s journey begins with his human companion, Ueda’s work on The Last Guardian has finally come to an end, and we can’t wait to see what he and his team have in store for us. The game is out for PlayStation 4 on December 6. Check out our interview with the director to learn more about the game’s development history.
