New trailer for 'John Wick: Chapter 2' ups the ante on the action

John Wick: Chapter 2 - Trailer 2 - Warner Bros. UK
Keanu Reeves re-established himself as an action hero in 2014’s surprise hit John Wick, and after giving us our first peek at the trailer for next year’s John Wick: Chapter 2 a few months ago, Lionsgate and Warner Bros. Pictures UK have delivered a fresh, even more intense second trailer for the much-anticipated sequel.

The latest trailer not only lays out a bit more of the story that propels Reeves’ hard-luck hitman back into the killing business, but it also offers a pretty impressive taste of how the sequel plans to up the ante on action the second time around.

John Wick: Chapter 2 is directed by Chad Stahelski, who co-directed the first film, and finds Reeves’ character heading off to Rome to deal with a former associate, an international assassins’ guild, and a ruthless crime lord. The film also brings back screenwriter Derek Kolstad, who scripted the 2014 film.

Along with Reeves as the titular killer with an affinity for black suits, the cast also includes Wanted actor Common, as well as Riccardo Scamarcio, Laurence Fishburne, Ruby Rose, and Franco Nero. Several cast members from the original film also reprise their roles, including Bridget Moynahan, Lance Reddick, John Leguizamo, and Ian McShane.

Made for just $20 million, John Wick was released in October 2014 and was a surprise hit that earned more than $86 million over its 13-week run in theaters. It also received positive reviews from professional critics and general audiences alike. The film was celebrated for its innovative fight choreography and influences drawn from classic action films — both Eastern and Western.

John Wick: Chapter 2 hits theaters February 10, 2017.

With John Wick: Chapter 4 out now and receiving rapturous praise from critics and audiences alike, there is one question that many people are now asking: What is the greatest action film of the 21st century? Mad Max: Fury Road, Skyfall, The Raid, The Dark Knight, and Mission Impossible: Fallout all have compelling cases. However, compiling the best action films of the last 23 years and not mentioning John Wick is a crime. Arguments could be made for all the John Wick movies; that's how strong they are in the action genre.

John Wick started with a simple premise. Wick (The Matrix's Keanu Reeves, who is no stranger to action), a former hit man, returns to the criminal world he left behind after the arrogant son of a Russian mobster kills his dog, which was a gift from his now-deceased wife. Hell-bent on revenge, Wick hunts down the son with reckless abandon, killing every single person who stands in his way. John Wick was a sleeper hit in 2014, and nine years later, the story about a legendary hit man mourning the loss of his wife and dog is a global franchise. The fourth film, John Wick: Chapter 4, just earned the highest opening weekend gross of the franchise.

John Wick vs. Jason Bourne: who would win in a fight to the death?
John Wick Jason Bourne

There have been plenty of great action franchises since the turn of the century, but two of the best tell the stories of master assassins. John Wick and Jason Bourne have been definitive figures in our recent pop cultural landscape, although their runs barely overlap at all. Wick was introduced in 2014, just two years before Jason Bourne brought an end to the lengthy Bourne movie saga.

Given the prominence of both characters in any action movie lover's life, though, it's only natural to wonder what might happen if these two were to go toe-to-toe with one another. It would certainly be a long, bloody, battle, but here's who we think would emerge victorious.
