LG debuts Tone Free headset and Tone Studio wearable speaker ahead of CES

LG’s Tone line of wireless earbuds — also known as “neckbuds” because of the band that sits around your neck — has been fairly well-regarded for years, but while the company has made various tweaks and improvements, they have mostly stayed the same. That is set to change at CES 2017, as the company is debuting two all-new models. The Tone Free represents the company’s first true wireless earbuds, while the Tone Studio is a personal wearable speaker.

“LG has a rich legacy of innovating in the wearable audio market, and our products have become the standard by which all other earphones are judged,” Michael Park, LG Electronics’ vice president of the Innovative Personal Devices Business Division, said in a statement. “We are committed to leading the way in this fast-moving market by developing exciting new products which appeal to every music-loving and convenience-seeking individual.”

The Tone Studio aims to provide you with a personal surround sound system by using four speakers. Two full-range drivers sit on top, while a pair of vibrating drivers on the bottom pump up the bass. LG teamed up with DTS — a company that knows a thing or two about surround sound — to ensure that the Tone Studio delivers a home theater-like experience on the go. You can even pair two headsets together to watch a movie with someone else.

Despite their true wireless nature, the Tone Free earbuds still use the Tone series’ neckband. This provides extra battery life since the earbuds charge whenever they are stored inside the neckband, and also offers vibration alerts for incoming calls and messages. The Tone Free earbuds support voice controls, allowing entirely hands-free operation, and also offer an optional charging case, similar to those offered with true wireless earbuds from other companies.

So far, there is no pricing or release information for the LG Tone Studio or Tone Free, but the company will be showing them off at CES next month in Las Vegas. These two aren’t the only headsets the company will show either, as it has said it will bring new Tone Infinim and Tone Ultra models, as well as existing models in the Tone series.

LG’s new true wireless earbuds self-sanitize when you charge them. Really
lg tone free true wireless earbuds 1

LG has officially entered the true wireless earbuds space with the announcement of its Tone Free HBS-FN4 and HBS-FN6 earbuds. The difference between the two is that the HBS-FN6 is considered a "higher-end" option, thanks to the inclusion of a self-cleaning case.

The self-cleaning feature is becoming a staple of LG earbuds, as we noted covering their Tone+ Free earbuds that were destined specifically for the Korean market. In addition to that self-cleaning feature, they boast audio backed by Meridian, and a familiar design in both black and white color options.
Self Cleaning Feature
As mentioned, the higher-end HBS-FN6 have a self-cleaning feature that activates when the buds are placed in the charging case. LG's case eliminates 99.9% of bacteria by using ultraviolet light focused on the silicon ear gel tips and the inner mesh.

Audio-Technica’s first true wireless earbuds with ANC debut at CES 2020
Audio-Technica ath_anc300tw

2020 will be the year that most audio companies offer a model of true wireless earbud that features active noise cancellation (ANC). In 2019, Sony, Apple, and Amazon were the only ones with this feature, but in 2020, you can add Audio-Technica to the list. Its $249 QuietPoint ATH-ANC300TW has made its debut at CES 2020, and it's the company's first true wireless earbuds with ANC.

Audio-Technica claims that its ANC system uses a newly developed hybrid design. The ANC mics are located both in front of and behind the driver, with one of the ANC mics mounted in a horizontal configuration within the sound chamber. According to Audio-Technica, this allows the location of the driver and geometry of the chamber to be optimized for an ideal balance of ambient noise reduction and audio performance.

LG’s Tone+ Free are true wireless earbuds for germaphobes
lg tone plus free true wireless earbuds antibacterial uv b w

This must be true wireless earbud season. Hot on the heels of Amazon's Echo Buds, and Microsoft's Surface Earbuds, we now have LG's new Tone+ Free, the South Korean giant's latest version of its true wireless earbuds. Without hands-free access to a voice assistant, massive battery life, or noise-cancellation, their killer feature is literally a killer feature: Inside the charging case, LG has included what it calls a UVnano function, that kills bacteria through the use of ultraviolet light.

LG doesn't offer any stats on just how many (or what kinds) of bacteria are harbored by a typical set of true wireless earbuds, but we suspect that if you're a germaphobe, "none" might be too many.
