The Sharp Aquos R is among the first phones with the Snapdragon 835

sharp aquos r news
Sharp may not be the best-known smartphone manufacturer out there, but that doesn’t mean its phones aren’t good. Case in point: the new Aquos R phone, which boasts the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and 4GB of RAM.

The device was just unveiled by Sharp, and is the first Aquos phone to be launched since the Aquos XX3 Mini, which was unveiled in October 2016.

Apart from the Snapdragon 835 and 4GB of RAM, the device comes with a 5.3-inch QHD display, HDR 10 capabilities, and a battery with a capacity of 3,160mAh. The camera on the back sits in at 22.6MP with an f/1.9 aperture and a wide-angle lens, and a 16MP front-facing camera. The cameras also feature optical image stabilization.

As a new device, the Aquos R also comes equipped with a USB-C port with Quick Charge 3.0, so you can recharge that 3,160mAh battery nice and quickly.

One interesting accessory for the phone is a charging dock, which actually has a few somewhat creepy features. For example, it uses EMOP AI assistant to listen to the user’s voice — so when you get a phone call the dock with automatically turn to face the owner of the phone.

Pricing and availability of the Sharp Aquos R have yet to be revealed, and we don’t yet know if that AI-powered dock will actually come with the phone or if it will be sold as a standalone accessory.

Of course, if you’re looking for a phone with the new Snapdragon 835, you can also either get the new Samsung Galaxy S8, or wait for the slew of phones with the chip that are set to be released over the next year or so. Sony and OnePlus will both likely step into the Snapdragon 835 ring over the next few months, and eventually we’ll also probably get phones from the likes of Google, LG, HTC, and more — all featuring the top-of-the-line processor.

Qualcomm and Asus have made their own ultimate Android phone
The Asus Qualcomm Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders.

Qualcomm has collaborated with Asus to make its definition of the ultimate Android smartphone. It’s called the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders, and as the clunky name suggests, it’s designed primarily as a perk for Qualcomm’s army of dedicated fans. To put it into better context, think of it like a Nexus smartphone commissioned by a chipmaker, rather than a software maker.

Like Google when it launched the Nexus range of hardware in 2011, Qualcomm is not a device manufacturer, hence it has worked with Asus to make the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders. To be clear, this isn’t a Qualcomm phone, it’s an Asus phone, and it will sell the phone through its own online store. Although it’s made to appeal to the 1.6 million-strong team of Snapdragon Insiders, anyone with $1,499 to spare can buy one.
What makes the phone special?
Yes, the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders (from here on, I’ll refer to the phone as the SSI) costs $1,499, so what do you get? After all, this is more expensive than the most powerful phones available today, such as the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and Asus’ top ROG Phone 5, so it better be good. From Qualcomm’s perspective, the SSI is a showcase for the Snapdragon 888 processor, paired here with 5G and a massive 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage space.

qualcomm snapdragon 888 plus phones news chip

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 888 Plus processor, an upgraded version of the current Snapdragon 888 chip found in many top smartphones, and various phone makers have already confirmed it will be powering future devices.

The Snapdragon 888 Plus has been given a power boost for a clock speed of just under 3.0GHz, compared to the Snapdragon 888’s 2.84GHz, plus the 6th generation of Qualcomm’s AI Engine for a 20% improvement in Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) performance. Like the Snapdragon 865 Plus released in 2020 it’s a gaming powerhouse, with all the same Snapdragon Elite Gaming features from the Snapdragon 888, plus updatable drivers for the best possible performance at all times. It shares many other features with the existing 888 platforms, including the X60 5G modem and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

The cheapest 5G phone chips — Snapdragon 480 and Dimensity 700 — fight it out
Oppo A54 5G and Realme 8 5G seen from the back

If you buy a reasonably priced 5G smartphone in the near future, it will probably be powered by either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 or the MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor. Should you be choosing your new phone based on which chip it uses, or simply not worry and just get the phone that takes your fancy?

To find out if there is any real difference between a 5G phone with the Dimensity 700 or Snapdragon 480 inside, we’ve put two of the latest phones with each chip against each other. In MediaTek’s corner is the Realme 8 5G, and fighting for Qualcomm is the Oppo A54 5G. Is this going to be a draw, or is one going to deliver a surprise knockout blow?
The phones and the chips
While the U.S. waits for more truly low-cost 5G phones, the trend is well underway in the U.K., where the Realme 8 5G costs 200 pounds/$278, and the Oppo A54 5G costs 220 pounds/$306. Both were announced in April this year, and are extremely similar to each other technically, aside from the chip and part of the camera.
