Is the Allpa the ultimate backpack for adventuring travelers?

Frequent travelers looking to deftly navigate busy airports, while also avoiding pesky baggage fees, will soon have a new weapon at their disposal courtesy of Cotopaxi. Last week, the outdoor gear company launched a crowdfunding campaign designed to help get its new Allpa travel backpack off the ground, with pledges skyrocketing past the modest $35,000 goal within a matter of hours. Now, the pack is scheduled for release in July, bringing a slew of intriguing design choices and organizational options along with it.

Made from a unique blend of 1000-denier polyester materials and 1680D ballistic nylon, the Allpa was built to be tough enough to survive the rigors of life on the road. It features a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) coating that provides a measure of water resistance, along with heavy-duty zippers, durable interior fabrics, and a total of 35 liters of storage capacity. The pack has also been designed to meet the strict criteria for carry-on luggage from all of the major airlines as well, meaning it will never have to leave your possession no matter where you go.

Cotopaxi has taken a decidedly minimalist approach to the exterior of the Allpa. The bag is completely free of outer pockets, and all buckles, zippers, and straps were designed so that they tuck out of the way. This gives the pack a clean-looking aesthetic awhile also helping avoid snagging it on anything while hustling through airports, boarding planes, or wandering through busy cities. Even the well-padded shoulder straps and hip belt can be stashed away, essentially converting the backpack into a duffel that can be lugged around using its four grab handles.

A central zipper runs down the middle of the Allpa, separating it into two distinct parts. When opened, it reveals an interior with an array of organizational options. On the right-hand side there is a single large, zipped, mesh pocket, while on the left, travelers will find a pair of smaller organizational pockets at the top, as well as another large zippered compartment below. A secure laptop and tablet sleeve is located behind the pack’s ventilated back panel, while an easy-access pocket on the top of the bag is perfect for storing a passport, smartphone, or other small items.

When the Allpa launches in July, it will be priced at $170, making it an attractive option for those who are practiced in the art of traveling light. Early-bird adopters can pre-order one now from the Indiegogo page for $130 however, which should be even more tempting.
