Samsung and Tumi buddy up to launch new version of the Gear S3 Frontier

If you haven’t yet considered a Samsung smartwatch, the company has a new offering to entice you. Samsung has teamed up with Tumi to offer a new version of the company’s flagship smartwatch: The Gear S3 Frontier Tumi Edition, which now offers a custom Tumi watch face, as well as a classy looking grey Italian canvas strap. According to Samsung, that strap is durable enough to handle water and rough conditions, just like the watch body.

Of course, under the hood the device is exactly the same as the original Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. It still offers a 1.3-inch display with a 360 x 360 resolution, and it still has a 380mAh battery, 768MB of RAM, and 4GB of storage. Not bad specs, to be sure — but no different than the already-available smartwatch.

The TUMI strap and watch face won’t come for free. While the standard Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is priced at $349, the TUMI Edition device will set you back $449 from Best Buy and Samsung. It’s on sale now if you buy it online, and you can get it in-store starting on August 6.

The Gear S3 Frontier was first launched last August, and is one of two Samsung Gear S3 devices — the other being the Samsung Gear S3 Classic. As the names suggest, the Gear S3 Frontier is a little more rugged and aimed at sports-use, while the Gear S3 Classic is targeted at business people or those looking for a slightly classier look. That’s not to say that the Gear S3 Frontier isn’t classy — it is, but the Gear S3 Classic is a little more refined.

Some have been expecting a Samsung Gear S4 to be launched toward the end of August, but this new release suggests that may not be the case. If Samsung and Tumi really wanted to team up, they could have done so for a Gear S4 rather than Gear S3, if the Gear S4 was set to launch within a few weeks. We also haven’t seen any rumors about a possible Samsung Gear S4 apart from a patent filing for a wireless charging method, and while that in itself doesn’t mean there won’t be one, it’s a little unusual these days for a major device to launch without at least a leak or two. Meanwhile, our list of the best smartwatches on the market has plenty of good choices.

samsung galaxy tab fe 5g us release price availability s7

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G is finally getting a U.S. launch and price details after previously having been announced for other markets in May. The S7 FE is a new version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus. Like other “Fan Edition” devices like the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, it acts as a more affordable, mid-range option next to Samsung’s premium lineup, but stands a step above the budget Galaxy Tab A series.

The Tab S7 FE 5G will be available starting August 5 for $669 directly from Samsung.com, AT&T, and Verizon. T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and other retailers will also get it in the following days. The 5G model will only come in Mystic Black, while the Wi-Fi version comes with various color options including black, silver, light green, and light pink.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 is adding an S Pen, replacing this year’s Galaxy Note
Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Note 20 S Pen.

Samsung's Unpacked event on August 11 is going to be a doozy. President of Mobile Communications, TM Roh, just dropped a ton of new information about what we can expect from the announcement. In news that will shock precisely nobody, he confirmed that Samsung will unveil new foldables at the event -- but it's the details that have us intrigued.

Roh first makes it clear that this next generation, expected to be the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, will be "armed with more durable, stronger materials." That's critical to the widespread adoption of foldables, which have made strides but are still inarguably more fragile than non-folding phones. But that strength matters in a very specific area for Samsung: It will be announcing a new S Pen specifically for foldables. It'll likely be different from the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra's, which could damage current foldable display coverings unless Samsung also unveils dramatically stronger "Ultra Thin Glass." The question is whether this will also lead to shortcomings in features like pressure sensitivity, tracking, and accuracy.

Samsung is bringing Galaxy S21 features to older phones starting today
4 weeks with the samsung galaxy s21 ultra update front

Samsung has been steadily rolling out Android 11 in the form of One UI 3.0, but it's already on to the next release: One UI 3.1. The new operating system update is now heading to a number of last-generation Samsung phones, and essentially brings some key Galaxy S21 features to older devices.

The update is now rolling out to the Galaxy S20 series, Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and Galaxy Z Flip. It's currently unclear if all variants of those phones are getting the update -- for example, the Galaxy S20 FE may not receive it for a while.
