DirecTV Now announces new features for 2018 as it passes 1 million subscribers

DirecTV Now 1 million subscribers
Just over a year after the service launched, live TV streaming service DirecTV Now has topped 1 million subscribers, Variety reports. To celebrate, DirecTV parent company AT&T has announced a batch of new features that will come to the service in 2018.

When DirecTV Now launched last year, it wasn’t a particularly smooth rollout. At the start, the service was plagued by performance issues, but a number of promotions, including offering an Apple TV for those who pre-paid for three months of service, allowed the service to gain more than 200,000 subscribers in its first month.

With the issues since smoothed out, the service has continued to pick up steam. Part of this is due to ongoing promotions, like a 4K Apple TV for those who pre-pay for four months of service, or a free Roku Streaming Stick for those who pre-pay for one month. AT&T also credits its aggressive efforts in adding local broadcast channels, of which the service now offers more than 200.

Earlier this year, DirecTV Now announced new features including a cloud DVR and offline viewing, both of which have yet to arrive on the service but are said to be on the way. In the case of the cloud DVR, the streaming service has rolled out the feature in beta form for certain customers, but with the end of the year quickly approaching, it seems like most customers are going to have to wait until 2018.

AT&T has announced other new features coming to the service in 2018, with perhaps the biggest being 4K and HD quality video. Other newly announced features include user profiles, which some competitors like PlayStation Vue and Hulu already offer, though others like Sling TV don’t. The company also announced it was carrying more than 35,000 on-demand titles, as well as more concurrent streams – a vital feature since the service currently limits customers to two simultaneous streams.

To celebrate its first birthday, DirecTV Now is currently offering new customers their first month of programming for $10 when using the promotional code BDAY2017. YouTube TV takes the No. 1 streaming spot with 5 million subscribers
YouTube TV on Roku.

There's a new No. 1 in the world of live TV streaming in the United States. The leader, apparently, is YouTube TV.

In a blog post penned by Christian Oestlien, VP of Product Management for YouTube TV and Connected TV, the company says "today, we're humbled that 5 million of you are currently on this journey with us." That's some 2 million more subscribers since the last time we got an update in October 2020, when YouTube TV crowed about having "more than 3 million" subscribers. The new 5 million number also includes those who are in the trial period, YouTube TV said.

YouTube TV now available in 5.1 surround sound on Amazon Fire TV devices

In 2021, Google's YouTube let it be known that it had finally updated its YouTube TV subscription live TV streaming service with 5.1 surround sound, a move that had been eagerly anticipated by its subscribers since, well, forever. But it only covered select smart TV platforms like LG and Samsung. Then, in early June 2022, the service announced that more devices and platforms were joining the 5.1 party, with the addition of Roku, Android TV, and Google TV. But for some reason, Amazon's Fire TV, the most popular streaming platform in the world, didn't make the 5.1 cut. Until now.

As of June 23, 2022, Amazon says that, "Fire TV Stick 4k Max, Fire TV Stick, and Fire TV Stick Lite all now support YouTube TV's 5.1 surround sound feature." Curiously, Amazon has made no mention of its other Fire TV devices, like its own Fire TV Omni 4K TV, the original Fire TV Stick 4K, or the aging Fire TV Cube. Still, it appears that now pretty much everyone who wants YouTube TV in 5.1 surround sound can get it. Oh, well except for Apple TV owners and those who use game consoles to watch live TV streaming. These folks are still stuck in two-channel stereo, at least for the time being.
