The Amazon Echo Show is a no-show in some stores. Is a new version coming?

For weeks now, Amazon Echo Show devices have been deeply discounted on Amazon. Now, they’re disappearing from shelves, fueling speculation that a newer version of the device could be released soon.

According to Alphr, Amazon’s United Kingdom website lists the Echo Show as “currently unavailable,” accompanied by the statement, “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.” Furthermore, the device isn’t available in many U.K. stores.

The Echo Show has been discounted by $100 ($130 instead of the usual $230) for weeks in the United States, and in some cases the price has dropped to as low as $100 — a sign of a potential model end run. Discounts on Amazon devices aren’t unusual during Prime Day and Black Friday, but the length to which the Show has been discounted tells us that perhaps another device is on the way.

Digital Trends found the Echo Show available on Amazon sites in Germany and Japan, in each case at a discount. When we checked online with Best Buy and Target in the U.S., Best Buy had the Echo Show available, but it was out of stock on Target’s website and at several stores.

Could this mean that Amazon is planning to introduce a new-and-improved Echo Show soon? It’s not that great a leap to assume so. The original version has been available since June 2017, so a new model wouldn’t be a shocker, especially in light of competitive smart displays introduced by Google.

To be clear, Amazon has not confirmed it is introducing a new Show. Last September, however,  the company held a hardware event where they introduced all kinds of new devices, including the new Echo, the Echo Spot, and Echo Plus. A similar event could very well be in the works for this month, with a new Echo Show on the docket.

No doubt, the pressure is on for Alexa and the Echo Show, particularly from Google Assistant. Recently announced Smart Displays featuring Google Assistant voice technology include the Lenovo Smart Display and JBL Link View, which are both sharp-looking and available now, and the LG ThinQ WK9, which will be available soon. Unlike the Echo Show, the Google Assistant Smart Displays can stream YouTube and feature clearer displays and better sound.

Amazon did up Alexa’s visual game in June with Show Mode Charging Docks that transform Alexa-enabled Fire HD 8 and HD 10 tablets into Echo Show devices. Perhaps this is what they’ll be focusing on instead of continuing the Echo Show?

Regardless, many signs point to an end of the Show as it exists now. As Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes said, the character paraphrasing Shakespeare’s Henry IV, “The game is afoot.”

5 reasons I still use the Echo Show 15 everyday
Amazon Echo Show 15 hanging horizontally on the wall in a kitchen.

The Echo Show 15 first released in December 2021. Much of the initial conversation around the smart display was that it was a large novelty -- a huge display that didn't have the same functionality as the Echo Show 10. It released in the midst of the work-from-home surge, and without video conferencing capabilities, the Echo Show 15 just didn't seem like it offered much.

That couldn't have been further from the truth. The large amount of screen real estate introduced a lot of utility that previous models didn't have. Widgets make it one of the most useful smart displays I've ever used, and that's saying a lot for someone who routinely works with these devices.

Best widgets for the Echo Show 15 for the connected family
The Echo Show 15 is the largest smart display yet.

One of the best features of Amazon's mighty Echo Show 15 is the capability of adding widgets to each user's home screen. Allowing for quick and easy shortcuts to some of the smart display's most immersive tools and features, widgets keep the Show 15 organized and optimized for the entire family.

While there aren't too many widgets available at this time, Amazon has opened widget development up to third-party companies, so we're bound to see more eventually. But for right now, there are a number of excellent widgets to load on your Echo Show 15, and we decided to shine a light on some of our favorites.

How to mount an Amazon Echo Show 15
Echo show 15 stands

If you’ve purchased a new Amazon Echo Show 15, there’s an important thing to know: You really need to plan to wall-mount it. If that’s not in the cards for you (maybe you’re in a rental or just don’t have wall space), you have a few options, since unlike pretty much all other Echo Show devices, you can pick how you want to orient the Echo Show 15. Let's take a look at the best ways to display your Echo Show 15 so it's accessible and safe from tipping over.
Use the included wall bracket for wall-mounting

You can hang the Echo Show 15 on a wall with the included bracket. You can read the instructions, but you simply screw the bracket to the wall. Use the drywall anchors if you don’t have an available stud. The Show 15 will slide onto the bracket for a safe and permanent installation.
