Nintendo is bringing the latest Zelda and Mario games to its VR headset

Nintendo Switch Labo VR Kit Super Mario Odyssey the legend of zelda breath of the wild

The already-flexible Nintendo Switch got an extra dose of versatility with Labo, a series of cardboard do-it-yourself kits that result in toys that take your Switch experience to another level. The company revealed the Nintendo Labo VR Kit this year, which will deliver an additional layer of immersion to some Switch games, and the company has revealed that Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be getting VR support for the device via a free software update.

Developing VR support for Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild is a smart move for Nintendo, as it puts two of the platforms biggest games right on the front lines when the VR Kit launches and consumers get their hands on it. Setting expectations will be key on the rollout of this peripheral and the reveal trailer for the virtual reality update gives us a little taste of the device’s potential. It’s tough to gauge the potential through a non-VR video, but you can read our Nintendo Labo VR Headset hands-on review to get a better idea of what to expect before launch.

When players utilize the Nintendo Labo VR Kit with Super Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild, they won’t be playing from the first-person perspective of their favorite heroes. Instead, players get access to a simple and shareable third-person perspective in VR that allows the user to freely look around the vibrant environments while controlling the Nintendo legends. Super Mario Odyssey, specifically, features bonus experiences set in the Cap Kingdom, Seaside Kingdom, and Luncheon Kingdom.

Breath of the Wild, on the other hand, can be experienced in its entirety, sans cutscenes, while using the Nintendo Labo VR Kit. The display method can be switched via the pause menu at any time during the adventure.

The Nintendo Labo VR Kit launches on April 12 and is available in two bundles, which are both available for pre-order. The $40 starter set includes the VR Goggles and Blaster. For $80, you get the VR Goggles, Wind Pedal, Camera, Elephant, Bird, and Blaster. The free software update for Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild that adds the virtual reality modes will be available on April 26.

Nintendo Switch’s weirdest launch game is getting a surprise sequel
Key art for Everybody 1-2-Switch!

Nintendo has quietly announced Everybody 1-2-Switch!, a sequel to one of the oddest launch titles for Nintendo Switch.
1-2-Switch! was a Nintendo Switch launch title that served as a tech demo of sorts for the Joy-Con controllers, with players completing minigames based on direction from actors in live-action clips. It's a very quirky and critically divisive Nintendo Switch game, so it's a bit surprising to see a follow-up. According to the eShop listing for Everybody 1-2-Switch!, this game lets players use their Joy-Cons or smartphones to complete a variety of team-based minigames. And that's about all we've seen or know about this $30 game ahead of its June 30 launch alongside some new pastel Joy-Cons.

Everybody 1-2-Switch!'s announcement was quite unorthodox for Nintendo. It simply tweeted about the game's existence and opened up preorders on the eShop. This all happened with no reveal trailer less than a month before the game's launch. It's unknown why Nintendo's taking this approach instead of including the game in a Nintendo Direct or other major showcase, but a 2022 report from Fanbyte may reveal the answer. According to that report, Everybody 1-2-Switch! tested horribly, and Nintendo worried that the game could "damage the company’s reputation as a great software developer."
Almost a year after that report, it seems that the game has improved enough to release, or maybe Nintendo is just willing to take the hit after the impressive launch and critical reception of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Either way, this is a weird sequel to a weird Nintendo Switch launch game that's being mutedly marketed so it doesn't elicit much hype. We'll just have to wait and play it for ourselves if we want to know whether Everybody 1-2-Switch! is an enjoyable game or not.
Everybody 1-2-Switch! will be released physically and digitally for Nintendo Switch on June 30.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom players are terrorizing its cutest characters
A Korok walks in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, players are given unlimited freedom to solve puzzles in any way they want. Shrine puzzles, for instance, usually have a developer-intended solution that can be entirely bypassed with clever thinking. However, players are already drunk with power as they find inventive ways to tackle problems ... and that's bad news for Hyrule's Korok population.

As was the case in Breath of the Wild, Koroks are cute little creatures that act as a primary collectible in Tears of the Kingdom. Link must solve small puzzles out in the world to reveal them and get a Korok seed in exchange, which is then used to upgrade his gear slots. In a recurring puzzle, Link finds a Korok who wants to be reunited with a friend off in the distance -- but it can't move due to its gigantic backpack. It's up to Link to move the Korok in any way he can think of.
