What to expect

There haven’t been very many official details released about Nvidia’s upcoming Computex 2019 press conference. Nvidia’s main webpage on the subject only provided a vague statement, saying that they “will unveil the latest technologies shaping today’s business.” The event page for the press conference on the Computex Taipei website provided the same level of sparse detail, but also managed to mention a few of the possible topics covered in the press conference. Namely, the press conference may cover the “latest technologies in A.I., content creation, gaming, and more.

Speaking of gaming, Nvidia may have dropped a hint recently about a possible forthcoming GeForce announcement. Nvidia uploaded a 16-second teaser video on YouTube titled “Something super is coming…” and it was hashtagged with GeForce. Considering the timing of the video’s release and the hashtag, it’s possible that, as Tom’s Hardware notes, Nvidia could use the Computex 2019 press conference to announce the development of a new ‘super’ GeForce graphics card. The video doesn’t offer much more detail than the word “super” and so how that would play out in a new graphics card is up for debate.

And if a new GeForce graphics card is on the agenda for next week’s press conference, it’s also possible that it might not be the only Nvidia graphics card featured during the event. As we reported last week, Nvidia might also have an answer to AMD’s Navi line of graphics cards. It was rumored that there may be a few “enhanced versions” of its RTX 2000-series Turing cards on the horizon. The enhanced version of these Turing cards are expected to feature faster memory.

Considering it’s been about two years since the last time Nvidia released a new line of graphics cards, it seems like the technology company would be on the right track if they did decide to at least announce the development of two new-ish graphics cards at this year’s Computex show. And if the word ‘super” is any indication, we’re at least in for an interesting press conference to say the least

Intel goes to war with Nvidia and Qualcomm
An AI recreation of Intel's co-founder, Gordon Moore.

"Whatever has been done can be outdone, and in ways we haven't imagined yet." Those were the words that Intel chose to open its Computex 2024 keynote with, and those words were spoken by the AI version of its co-founder, Gordon Moore.

Intel stands by the words of its co-founder, though, while some big names in the tech space disagree -- such as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Huang has been pretty vocal about his belief that Moore's Law is no longer practical, going as far as to say that "Moore's Law is dead" in 2022. Now, not for the first time, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger fired back with another take on the matter.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger delivers the Day 1 closing keynote at IAA Mobility

Intel is the next big name that will be talking up its upcoming products and technologies at Computex, with a big keynote address from CEO Pat Gelsinger scheduled for tonight. While we won't be talking about his jacket like with the Nvidia CEO's, we may well hear about the CPUs that are going up against AMD's Zen 5 later this year.

Alongside new chip announcements, AI will certainly be a major component of the announcement, as it has been with just about everyone else's so far.

Intel will hold its keynote at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on June 3 (that's 11 a.m. local time on June 4 for anyone in attendance in Taiwan). If you want to watch it live, Intel has a livestream planned for its own website where you can register your interest and watch along at home.

Nvidia’s new standard crams an RTX 4080 Super in a tiny case
A mini PC sitting in front of the PS5.

In the past couple of years, we have seen desktop class graphics cards not only grow in terms of performance, but also their physical size. This has been a point of concern for enthusiasts who swear by the small form factor (SFF) design. While Nvidia’s lineup of GeForce GPUs come in a range of sizes, higher power and beefier cards mean more challenges for the small form factor industry.

To address the issue, Nvidia has come up with a set of new guidelines for small form factor-ready enthusiast GeForce GPUs, which it shared at Computex 2024. According to the company, these guidelines will be given to GPU third-party board partners and case manufacturers to help make a common standard catering specifically to those who want a compact, yet powerful gaming rig.
