Battle to be the best plumber in the 75-player, fan-made Mario Royale

A classic cease-and-desist letter from Nintendo is probably in the mail but for now, gamers can enjoy a fan-made version of Super Mario Bros. with a battle royale twist. As initially reported by The Verge, Mario Royale is a web game where 75 Marios race to finish all of the levels in a random world.

Super Mario Maker 2 releases this month and, at launch, random players will be able to race through custom levels from creators. Mario Royale takes the popular battle royale genre and applies it to the classic Super Mario Bros. levels while also giving gamers a taste of the random competition they’ll be facing in Super Mario Maker 2.

When you jump into Mario Royale, you’re placed in a lobby with a collection of up to 74 other Marios. Once everyone hits a “Ready” block or after a certain amount of type passes, the 75 players are dropped into a random world. Then, you must race all the way to the end of the world with the first player crowned the best Mario. Second and third place runners are recognized as well.

We played through a handful of attempts and the first thing that comes to mind is “chaos.” You can see all 74 competitors making their runs as you do, up until they get too far ahead of you or fall behind. When players get ahead of you, it is worth it to keep going because the player count can dwindle due to all of the hazards you encounter. Not only are you trying to get to the final flagpole quickly, but every player also only has one life. Thus, you can be the last of about 10 people but end up winning because the players ahead of you got greedy and ended up losing that one life.

If you want to put your platforming skills to the test, don’t delay. Nintendo isn’t known to let fan-made projects like these live for a very long time, so send it to your friends and get an early taste of what the competitive aspect of Super Mario Maker 2 will feel like. With Tetris 99 and Mario Royale showing us the inventive ways the battle royale model can be applied to unexpected places, hopefully more developers take note and innovate more within the genre.

Warzone 2.0’s ranked mode fixes my biggest battle royale pet peeve

As part of the Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 Season 3 Reloaded update, Activision finally added a long-awaited Ranked mode. While the mode plays almost exactly like standard battle royale on Al Mazrah, it has a number of minor differences that give it an edge. Though there's one feature in particular that stands out, as it fixes one of my biggest pet peeves in the battle royale genre.

In Ranked, players are discouraged from quitting partway through a match, giving squads a better chance of coming out on top. Placement is key in the mode, and you aren't going to place high if your squad leaves you partway through. To support that idea, players are heavily penalized for quitting a match early. The whole premise of the mode is to climb the ranks, so it's not worth losing Skill Rating (SR) points for quitting before the match is over.

Though Toad may be the weakest member of the main cast, he never had much time to show off his skills as a fighter in this film. Fortunately for him, he knows his way around the Mushroom Kingdom and can surely fend for himself out in the wilderness since Mario does meet him wandering the mushroom fields. And despite his small size, Toad never backs down from a fight, choosing to defend Peach and his friends at any opportunity.

Nintendo’s Super Mario series is so monumental to the medium of video games that you might even think of the mustachioed plumber when you hear “video games” mentioned at all. From his earliest days as “Jumpman” battling Donkey Kong, to his latest adventures on the Nintendo Switch, to his latest movie appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario has consistently been one of the greatest characters in video games. He’s such an iconic character that countless video games have had him as the star, and we attempted to rank them.

For our list, we had two main criteria. First, the games have to be platformers -- either 2D or 3D. This eliminates Mario sports games, the Mario Kart series, role-playing games, and all the Mario Parties. Secondly, the games have to have Mario himself as the lead character. This eliminated Super Mario Land 3 and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. In the end, we were left with 20 games. None of them are bad, but we did have to name a loser. We also chose to omit The Lost Levels and instead considered Super Mario Bros. 2 as the definitive second game in the series.
