Spotify Wrapped gives a personalized look at who you listened to most in 2019

Later this week, Spotify will be unveiling its personalized Wrapped stats. It’s a chance for Premium users to look back at the year that was and see which artists, songs, albums, genres, and podcasts captured their attention in 2019. Spotify has offered both a public and a personalized set of Wrapped stats in the past, but this year the company is expanding its view of the music and spoken-word world to an entire decade.

The Wrapped toolset, which also reveals facts like how many minutes of music you heard and how many songs you liked, has traditionally only been accessible via a custom website, making it a bit awkward to use. Last year, it required a bit of a hunt to find it. This year, however, Spotify is unlocking Wrapped’s potential as a social sharing opportunity: The Wrapped experience will also be available within the Spotify app itself, and share cards will be available for you to post on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat.

Beyond the annual opportunity to navel-gaze at our own music habits, Wrapped is an excellent opportunity to understand what the rest of the world is listening to. Given its massive global reach, Spotify is in a unique position to offer this perspective. Competing services like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Google Play Music tend to have a much more U.S.-centric audience.

You might think this would reveal vast differences in how humans across the planet listen to music, but for the most part, the numbers reveal how we’re all heavily influenced by the strongest currents in music culture. Here’s a glimpse at the Wrapped stats for 2019, and the nine years that preceded it.

Spotify’s HiFi tier was MIA in 2021. Will 2022 be any different?

Spotify announced almost a year ago that it would launch a new subscription tier for its Premium members called Spotify HiFi before the end of 2021. As the name suggests, Spotify said the new, more expensive tier would distinguish itself by offering "lossless CD-quality" audio -- a significant step up in quality over the company's current maximum streaming quality, which is still based on a lossy compression system. But 2021 is now in our collective rearview mirror and, so far, there's still no sign of Spotify HiFi.

And concerns are growing that even Spotify can't say for sure when or if it will actually launch the new tier. Now, 9to5Mac has spotted a message from the company on its community support site that doesn't exactly fill us with confidence:

Chill with Spotify for free on Delta Airlines this holiday season

There's some good news for Spotify listeners who are planning to take a trip this holiday season on Delta Airlines -- you'll be able to stream as much music as you like without paying the airline's customary fees for Wi-Fi data. Delta won't be playing Santa for long, as the free data period only lasts from December 8, 2021, to January 19, 2022.

To take advantage of the free data, all you need to do is connect your phone or tablet to the in-flight Wi-Fi system and then fire up your Spotify app. There's only one caveat: Your aircraft needs to be equipped with Viasat for its data connectivity, and not every Delta flight has this gear.

If you like listening to Spotify using the company's web interface, you might still be among those who are without music at the moment. An Apparent problem with Google Cloud has been responsible for interrupting access to several major web services including Snapchat, Discord, Fitbit, and Nest apps.

Downdetector.com indicates that there were more than 50,000 reports of Spotify trouble starting around noon Eastern Time, but these numbers have been steadily declining since then. Spotify is aware of the problem and has reported it on its community site. It still says that the issue is under investigation. According to the article, both the web and the mobile player are affected.
