Amazon releasing interactive game Starfinder via Alexa-enabled devices

Amazon is teaming up with tabletop RPG maker Paizo to adapt their popular roleplaying game Starfinder. The game won’t be made into a video game, but rather an interactive experience played via any device that supports Amazon assistant Alexa.

The pilot, which debuted in December 2019, and the first three episodes of the game are available now, with episodes four through six releasing in October. If you have an Alexa-enabled device, all you need to do is say, “Alexa, play the Starfinder game,” and the interactive RPG will begin.

Audible Studios, the audiobook wing of Amazon, has assembled an impressive cast of voice actors to bring Starfinder to life, including sci-fi veteran Nathan Fillion and video game voiceover royalty Laura Bailey. They are joined by 11 other actors that players will engage with on their journey.

Amazon promises nearly 13 hours of interactivity across the entire season of the game, the recording of which took 125 hours in the studio and involved a 745-page script.

As for Alexa, the voice assistant is more popular than ever with Amazon reported engagement with Alexa quadrupling in the last two years and recent stay-at-home orders causing interactivity to trend even further, something the A.I. has in common with gaming.

Starfinder is a science-fiction take on Paizo’s fantasy TTRPG Pathfinder, the de facto roleplaying experience. After finding popular appeal with its futuristic storyline Distant Worlds in the main Pathfinder game in 2012, Starfinder released in 2017 to rave reviews. Based on the pilot’s high rating on Alexa devices, it seems Amazon might have successfully translated the spacefaring adventure into a verbally interactive experience.

Dead Island 2 supports experimental Amazon Alexa voice controls
A screamer yells on a beach in Dead Island 2.

Dead Island 2 was the final announcement of Gamescom Opening Night Live, and it made a solid first impression with its cinematic and gameplay reveal that highlighted a zombified Los Angeles. But did you know Dead Island 2 also features Amazon Alexa voice controls?
Shortly after Dead Island 2's announcement, Amazon unveiled Alexa Game Control via a developer blog. With Alexa Game Control, players can say specific phrases to trigger in-game interactions. Supported phrases for Dead Island 2 span weapon swapping ("Swap to my best weapon."), navigating ("Where is the nearest workbench?"), and gaining the attention of enemies ("Hey, zombie!"). Alexa Game Control will work for North American players who speak English when it launches alongside Dead Island 2.

Interestingly, Alexa Game Control won't require players to own an Echo device or say "Hey, Alexa" beforehand. Players can just say these phrases right into the headset they are using to play the game. Two caveats exist: The Verge confirmed that players will have to be connected to the internet, and Alexa Game Control's website says that players will have to connect their Amazon account to the game they're playing first. Dead Island 2 is the only game to support the technology, but Amazon has a form for interested developers to fill out.
I can't help but think back to the Kinect days and how developers poorly added voice functionality to games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I then recalled my playthrough of Ryse: Son of Rome a couple of years back, where the Kinect voice-driven sections stood out like a sore thumb and could be circumvented with a button press. Voice-driven video game controls haven't worked out thus far, but Alexa Game Control is attempting to bring it back into fashion. I'm curious to see whether it will enhance Dead Island 2 or add nothing substantial to the experience.
We'll be able to see if Alexa Game Control lives up to its promises soon, as Dead Island 2 will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on February 3, 2023.

Samsung Gaming Hub expands with Amazon Luna’s addition
The Amazon Luna app running through Samsung Gaming Hub.

Samsung Gaming Hub's hold on cloud gaming just got a little bit stronger with the addition of Amazon Luna. Starting today, August 3, those who own Samsung's 2022 smart TVs can see what Amazon Luna's cloud gaming subscription service offers.
Samsung previously confirmed that Amazon Luna would come to the service, but it was not part of Samsung Gaming Hub as it originally rolled out on June 30 with cloud gaming services like Google Stadia, Nvidia GeForce Now, and Xbox Game Pass. After today, Samsung Gaming Hub users in North America can access Amazon Luna, which brings the total number of streamable games on the hub to over 1,000.

Amazon Luna is a channel-based cloud gaming platform that first entered beta in late 2020. Digital Trends reviewed the platform earlier this year, but only gave it two-and-a-half stars. "Amazon Luna is a decent cloud gaming platform let down by a lack of compelling experiences," the review says. "Content is king, and with stiff competition from now-restructured Stadia and Game Pass-driven Xbox Cloud Gaming, Luna doesn’t do much to stand out. It has some uses for very specific audiences and situations, but that isn’t enough to justify a monthly subscription for most people."
Although we don't think this is an amazing service, it's still worth checking out for Samsung Gaming Hub users if they have an Amazon Prime subscription. Amazon Prime members can access a few games on Amazon Luna, free of charge, each month, so they'll always have something to play. Throughout August, Amazon Prime members can play Control: Ultimate Edition, Steel Assault, a remake of Myst, and Garfield Kart: Furious Racing for free.
Samsung Gaming Hub is available now on 2022 Smart TVs at the BU8000 model and above and Samsung's Smart Monitors Series.
