New Sims 4 skin tones and hair options arrive on October 6

The Sims 4 will get a free base game update, which will visually improve darker skin tones and some hair options, following a pubic commitment to improving representation.

Electronic Arts said the update will fix the game’s current blotchy and ashen look to darker skin tones, and alter two base game hairstyles will be changed. The update arrives on PC and Mac on October 4 and on November 10 for console players.

Players will need to toggle the Uncompressed Sim Texture option on in order to see the skin tone updates when they go live. EA notes that the update may crash on some graphics cards and recommends ones rates medium or higher with at least 2GB of video RAM.

EA said the October update is only the first step in more sweeping changes coming to the game starting this December. The Sims 4 will receive “at least a hundred new skin tone swatches in cool, neutral, and warm tones with a particular emphasis on darker skin tones.” The game will also add a new slider for all skin tones that allows players to change how light or dark they appear. The December update will also add a slider for makeup options and will improve two other base game hairstyles.

EA said it’s collaborating with external partners and community members on the update. It plans to share more news about the changes in late October or early November.

The Sims has come under fire in recent years for its lack of representation for people of color. Some players in The Sims community have gone around EA by creating their own free, custom mods, which add more diverse hairstyles and skin tones.

In August, executive producer Lyndsay Pearson said that The Sims 4 team was committed to making the game’s character creations options more inclusive for people of color.

“We hear you and recognize that we have not done enough to address the variety of skin tones and hairstyles that you expect to find in The Sims 4. While we have made additions and improvements and fixes in the past, there is much more for us to do.”

The best Sims 4 mods

One of the things that makes the Sims 4 one of the best cozy games is how much freedom it gives you in crafting your perfect simulated life. There have been dozens upon dozens of official DLC add-ons for the game over the years that give you more content and options to play with while you wait for Sims 5, but even that is a drop in the bucket compared to what modders have done. These aren't mere Sims 4 cheats; they bring brand-new content and systems into the game at no cost. If you thought the number of official add-ons was overwhelming, wait until you start looking through the mods. Instead, you can just check out our curated list of the best Sims 4 mods.
What is a mod?
If you're here, you probably already know what a mod is, but for those getting into them for the first time, let's go through what a mod is. A mod -- as the name suggests -- is a modification to the game created by a member of the community. Oftentimes, mods are in line with what the community wants, and in some instances, are even more effective than updates implemented by Maxis. Other times, a mod is an outrageous yet fun implementation that makes the game more enjoyable. Modding has become so ingrained in The Sims experience that The Sims 4 has a section in its menu devoted to mods, allowing you to enable them without going through any weird processes on the back end.

The game's developers have embraced mods and recognize that the community loves to create and use them. It's part of the experience. With that in mind, you will need to download the mods you want to use, install them, and enable them from within the game in order for them to function properly. Once you do so, you'll be ready to jump in and try out your new mods.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor finally coming to PS4 and Xbox One in September
Cal Kestis wielding his blue lightsaber and carrying BD-1 in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

EA and Respawn Entertainment have revealed that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will come out on September 17. That means players who only own last-gen consoles will be able to try out this excellent action-adventure game that was previously exclusive to PC and current-gen consoles.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a sequel to 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and continues the story of Cal Kestis, who stumbles upon a new threat connected to the universe's High Republic era. I gave the game a four-star review when it launched in April 2023, writing that "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor still tells a thematically rich, character-driven Jedi tale in one of the most densely packed 3D Metroidvania games I’ve ever played. It’s now the definitive single-player Star Wars experience."

Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred’s new class turns Sanctuary into a zoo
A Spiritborn fights enemies in Diablo 4.

The task of creating a new class for the Diablo series, which has stretched for nearly three decades now, is not easy. The newly detailed Spiritborn class, a major component of Diablo 4’s Vessel of Hatred expansion, represents a step forward for Blizzard on its journey to make Diablo 4 and its retinue of job classes more personalized for individual players. At an event held at Blizzard’s headquarters, I sat down with the Diablo 4 team to go hands-on with the Spiritborn class in a slice of Vessel of Hatred and discover its origins.
It’s a zoo out there
The newest class to Diablo will likely remind many series fans of the Monk at first blush with its relentless attacks and nimble movement. That comparison does not last beyond the menu screen, however; the Spiritborn’s connection to the ethereal animals of the region is a different beast altogether. This rare kinship not only allows the class to channel different forms of a fun and ferocious battle style, but opens up personal customization for the class in a way Diablo has never seen before.

Spiritborn, both the class and the character, was born of the jungles of Nahantu. That biome was first seen in Diablo 2 and is known as much for its verdant overgrowth as it is for its connection to the spirit realm. “That was actually our point of inspiration,” Diablo 4 director Brent Gibson explained at the event Digital Trends attended. “We started with the idea that the class should be related to Nahantu.”
