Pac-Man 99 is a new battle royale game coming to Nintendo Switch today

Pac-Man 99, a new battle royale game based on the iconic franchise, is coming to Nintendo Switch later today. The game will be free for all Nintendo Online subscribers and features optional, paid DLC.

The new release was a surprise announcement late Tuesday night. Like other battle royale games, Pac-Man 99 features 99 players trying to outlast one another while playing a round of Pac-Man. The game features mechanics similar to Tetris 99 and Super Mario 35, two other Nintendo Online freebies.

The game will go live on the Nintendo Switch eShop tonight, April 7, at 6 p.m. PT and is exclusive to Nintendo Online members for free.

Players work through standard Pac-Man mazes and eat ghosts to send Jammer Pac-Mans to another player’s board. Bumping into one will drop an opponent’s movement speed. Players can gobble up a row of sleeping ghosts to create a ghost train that can be eaten to do even more damage.

Like Tetris 99, the game features targeting features that allow players to pick which opponents they attack. There’s a power-up system too, which can give a boost to stats like speed or power.

The game has additional paid DLC for players who want to expand their experience. Players can buy individual Namco-inspired themes for $2 each, a pack that adds more game modes for $15, or a deluxe edition that contains everything for $30.

The game is a bit of a left-field surprise, but it isn’t the first Pac-Man battle royale game. Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle is a Google Stadia game that has 64 players compete to be the last Pac-Man standing. There was also a game literally called Pac-Man Battle Royale in 2011 where four players competed against one another.

Nintendo has quietly announced Everybody 1-2-Switch!, a sequel to one of the oddest launch titles for Nintendo Switch.
1-2-Switch! was a Nintendo Switch launch title that served as a tech demo of sorts for the Joy-Con controllers, with players completing minigames based on direction from actors in live-action clips. It's a very quirky and critically divisive Nintendo Switch game, so it's a bit surprising to see a follow-up. According to the eShop listing for Everybody 1-2-Switch!, this game lets players use their Joy-Cons or smartphones to complete a variety of team-based minigames. And that's about all we've seen or know about this $30 game ahead of its June 30 launch alongside some new pastel Joy-Cons.

Everybody 1-2-Switch!'s announcement was quite unorthodox for Nintendo. It simply tweeted about the game's existence and opened up preorders on the eShop. This all happened with no reveal trailer less than a month before the game's launch. It's unknown why Nintendo's taking this approach instead of including the game in a Nintendo Direct or other major showcase, but a 2022 report from Fanbyte may reveal the answer. According to that report, Everybody 1-2-Switch! tested horribly, and Nintendo worried that the game could "damage the company’s reputation as a great software developer."
Almost a year after that report, it seems that the game has improved enough to release, or maybe Nintendo is just willing to take the hit after the impressive launch and critical reception of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Either way, this is a weird sequel to a weird Nintendo Switch launch game that's being mutedly marketed so it doesn't elicit much hype. We'll just have to wait and play it for ourselves if we want to know whether Everybody 1-2-Switch! is an enjoyable game or not.
Everybody 1-2-Switch! will be released physically and digitally for Nintendo Switch on June 30.

When does Hogwarts Legacy come out on Nintendo Switch?

Hogwarts Legacy is the latest and greatest adventure in the magical Harry Potter universe. Set in the 1800s, the story focuses on a generic fifth-year student who’s tasked with taking down a brewing Goblin rebellion in-between their school duties. For Potterheads of all ages, a game that allows them to traverse the halls of Hogwarts, learn their favorite spells from the books and films, and fight enemies like dark wizards, trolls, and dragons is an absolute dream.

The game launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC in February. While reviews were mixed across the board, longtime fans jumped into the wizarding world in droves — over 15 million copies of the game have been sold to date. Unfortunately, players on the top-tier consoles were the only ones who had access to the game for a while. Instead of launching on all platforms simultaneously, Hogwarts Legacy's release has been staggered.

If you were hoping that a new Nintendo console was right on the horizon after the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, think again. Nintendo has confirmed that it plans to release no new hardware over the next 12 months.

On May 9, Nintendo shared its financial results for the last fiscal year with investors. Console and software sales both lagged by a bit compared to the year before, with Nintendo crediting a semiconductor shortage and a weaker holiday season for that. Looking to the next year, the company hopes to sell 15 million new Nintendo Switch consoles on top of the 125.62 million that are already out there. Those forecasts are all based on existing hardware, according to a report by Bloomberg.
