Google Stars Add Instant Bookmarking to Search

Google searches just got a little more personal. As if embedded news results, related search suggestions and scrolling Twitter results weren’t enough to tweak the basic search page, starred results will now boost your favorite sites to the top of any given search.

As with Gmail messages, users are now able to star their favorite sites in search results. Unlike traditional bookmarks, they don’t need to be organized or filed away: One click and it’s in the system. Afterward, Google will prioritize results from your starred sites.

For instance, after bookmarking Digital Trends, a future search for a particular cell phone would fast-track results from DT and send them straight to the top. Stars will also integrate with Google Bookmarks and Google Toolbar.

The new star-based system replaces SearchWiki, which Google introduced in 2008 to attempt the same time of personalization. According to Google product manager Cedric Dupont, the company attempted to integrate lessons from that program into stars. “In our testing, we learned that people really liked the idea of marking a website for future reference, but they didn’t like changing the order of Google’s organic search results,” Cedtric wrote on the official Google Blog. “With stars, we’ve created a lightweight and flexible way for people to mark and rediscover web content.”

Google will begin rolling out the stars over the course of the next few days for users who log in.

Google Nest Wi-Fi Pro adds Wi-Fi 6E but loses compatibility
Google Nest Wi-Fi Pro in Lemongrass color rests on a shelf.

Google just released a new Wi-Fi router, the Nest Wi-Fi Pro, as part of its ongoing efforts to make it quicker and easier to watch videos on YouTube, do a Google search, or connect to your Nest smart home devices. Without reliable internet access, that Google-y goodness might not be available. It's also more eye-catching than earlier models and up to twice as fast but there are a few concerns with this new mesh router.

Nest Wi-Fi pro adds the latest wireless standard, Wi-Fi 6E, which has three bands instead of the usual two. That means the Nest Wi-Fi Pro can connect to older devices at 2.4 and 5 GHz, as well as newer technology using the latest 6GHz radio frequency band.

Google has just announced the expansion of its upcoming privacy tool. It will soon begin rolling out to a wider audience, and once it's out, you'll be able to easily request the removal of your personal data.

Now, at Search On 22, Google shared that it will be expanding this tool with an additional useful feature -- the ability to set up alerts if, and when, your PII appears on the web.
