Samsung R80 Notebooks Coming to Best Buy

Samsung may not be a huge name in the North American computer market, but the South Korean electronics giant is looking to raise its profile, bringing its “premium” R80 computer line to consumers via top retailer Best Buy. Samsung is positioning the systems as multimedia and entertainment powerhouses, and the R80 series feature Intel Core i3 and i5 processors, Nvidia graphics, Blu-ray options, and screen sizes of 14-, 15.6-, and 17-3 inches—and the 17.3-inch model will be exclusive to BestBuy.com.

“Best Buy continues to be an important retail partner for Samsung,” said Samsung Electronics Information Technology Division director of product marketing Todd Nouman, in a statement. “True to Samsung’s unique, customer-focused design aesthetic, these mobile PCs are flexible enough to be used as mobile devices or desktop replacements for all-day use.”

At the high end, the BestBuy.com-exclusive R780 sports an Intel Core i5 processors, a 17.3-inch 1,600 by 900-pixel display driven by Nvidia GeForce GT330M graphics, 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, a DVD Super-Multi drive, HDMI output, gigabit Ethernet, and 802.11b.g.n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR wireless networking. The system also packs a 1.3 megapixel webcam and 4 watt stereo speakers.

Stepping back a little in screen-size—but upping the high-def factor—the Samsung R580 will roll with a 15.6-inch 1,366 by 768-pixel display driven by Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics, but will also pack a Blu-ray drive for movie-watching pleasure; most of the rest of the R580’s specs match its 17-inch sibling. The Samsung R480 takes things down another notch, dropping to a 14-inch 1,366 by 768-pixel display powered by Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics, an Intel Core i3 processor, and a VGA-resolution webcam—however, it still packs the Blu-ray drive.

All the systems will be available March 7, and ship with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). The 17-inch R780 will start at $929, while the Blu-ray-equipped R580 and $480 will start at $829 and $729, respectively.

Best Buy is practically giving away this HP Chromebook today
HP Chromebook 14b sits on a desk.

If you're looking at laptop deals for affordable Windows-based machines but nothing has caught your attention, it may be time to switch your search towards Chromebooks. Here's an offer that may be too good for you to refuse -- the HP Chromebook 14a for just $149, which is half its sticker price of $299 following a $150 discount from Best Buy. We're not sure how long this bargain will last, but since there's a chance that stocks sell out quickly, you're going to have to hurry up with your purchase if you don't want to miss out.

Why you should buy the HP Chromebook 14a
The HP Chromebook 14a doesn't look like much on paper, as it's equipped with the Intel Celeron N4120 processor, integrated Intel UHD Graphics 600, and 4GB of RAM. However, according to our Chromebook versus laptop comparison, it's still going to run smoothly because of Google's Chrome OS, which rely on online apps and Android apps instead of traditional software that you need to install. The HP Chromebook 14a will never challenge the best laptops as it won't be able to handle demanding tasks, but for basic functions like typing reports, making presentations, and doing online research, it's more than enough.

Why you should buy the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5
There's a lot to love about the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 if you want something that looks good, is highly portable, yet is still fairly powerful. It uses an Intel Evo Platform Core i5 processor so it's pretty speedy while also offering efficient battery life of up to 18 hours. Yup, you're not going to need to recharge it throughout the day. Alongside the 12th-generation processor is 8GB of memory and 512GB of SSD storage. The latter means it's unlikely you'll run out of space soon which is a big bonus. Perhaps the highlight though is the 13.6-inch PixelSense touchscreen that looks better and sharper than many of the best laptops. The 2256 x 1504 resolution looks crisp as you use it, while its size means the laptop weighs under three pounds so you can easily take it between classes.
