PS3 Has the Most Top Selling Games of the Year So Far

A new report out from NPD breaks down the 30 best selling games of the year, across all systems. Nothing really shocking, but there are some interesting trends.

Despite reports of Wii sales slowing at a faster than expected rate, much of which is being blamed on the lack of game selection, a Wii game- New Super Mario Bros.- continues to hold the top spot while two others- Sports Resort w/Wii Motion Plus and Fit Plus w/Balance Board- are in the top 10. The European numbers are even better for the Wii.

The Nintendo DS didn’t fare quite as well, but it does have the second best selling game in Pokeman: Soulsilver Version. Overall it holds six of the top 30 spots.

Also of note is the rise of PlayStation 3. The PS3 finally seems to be hitting its stride. The consoles are beginning to turn a profit after years of taking a loss on each unit sold, God of War III took the third spot and no doubt helped move some consoles, and if Final Fantasy XIII is any indication, fans are beginning to choose the PS3 versions of multiplatform games. The PS3 version of FFXIII came in 7th, while the Xbox 360’s version was a distant 15th. The PS3 version of Dante’s Inferno also managed to outsell its Xbox 360 counterpart. Overall, the Sony has the most games in the top 30, with nine top sellers.

Things aren’t looking quite as rosy for the Xbox 360. With only seven games in the top 30, Microsoft will need to step it up during June’s E3. The high profile release of the Natal and the upcoming Halo: Reach should help with that.

More games will be added to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog in less than a week, so now is the best time to catch up on some July additions you might have missed. Last month was a surprisingly strong one for the service, as it got plenty of compelling additions across all fronts. While additions like Remnant II and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion garnered the most attention as the highest-profile releases, several games that are more underrated than those slipped into PS Plus' game catalog at the same time. As such, I'm recommending three of those games to people looking for something to play on PS Plus this weekend.
No More Heroes 3

No More Heroes 3 is a ridiculous game from eccentric game developer Suda51 and his development studio Grasshopper Manufacture. It's an entertaining action game with hilarious writing and an enjoyable story about Travis Touchdown working his way up the Galactic Superhero Rankings to take on an alien prince named FU. What really gives the No More Heroes games their distinct flair is the fact that they aren't afraid to get meta. No More Heroes 3 will constantly call out the player directly and will sometimes even change up its gameplay, so it's better that I don't spoil that much and just recommend that you go and check this one out for yourself. No More Heroes 3 is available on PS4 and PS5 through the PS Plus Premium and Extra Game Catalog. It's also on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

The PlayStation 3 had a rough start. The price was high, and there weren't all that many great games compared to the best Xbox 360 games. However, Sony stuck with it and eventually managed to turn things around, leading to one of the most important generations in terms of new IP. Since that time, video game graphics and gameplay have only gotten more realistic with the best PS4 games and even better with the best PS5 games.

Despite all the advancements and new consoles, you may sometimes be in the mood to revisit some of your favorite games that you played as a kid or teenager. If you missed out on the fantastic Monster Train when it originally launched on PC in 2020, now is the perfect time to catch up on one of the best roguelike deck-builders. The indie highlight is now available on PlayStation 5 and it's as inventive as ever. On paper, Monster Train may sound like any other card battler following in the wake of Slay the Spire. You will choose a path through various stages, engage in turn-based combat, and build your deck until you either fail or reach the end (usually the former).

Where Monster Train diverts from others in the space is how battles are structured. I admit that I wasn't sold on the game by its description due to how overwhelming and complex deck-builders can get. Just like Marvel's Midnight Suns, however, you shouldn't let your aversion to cards turn you off from an amazing and addictive title. And if you already love card games, this is one train you need to catch.
All aboard the Monster Train
In Monster Train, players control several demon forces attempting to bring the last embers of hell via train across a frozen tundra while angelic forces attempt to snuff it out for good. It's a serviceable story to get the action going, though narrative isn't the draw here.
