Xbox 360 Sales Rise, Despite Poor Video Game Sales

The June sales figures for the video game industry have been released by the NPD Group, and for the second straight month the sales are down- this time by as much as 6-percent from the same time last year. There is a bright spot though- hardware sales have risen 5-percent, pushed primarily by the release of the new Xbox 360. Accessories are also up 6-percent, driven by the Xbox Live 1600 point card, the top selling accessory of June, for the fourth consecutive month.

According to Business Insider, the Xbox 360 experienced its second largest non-holiday month since September of 2007, when Halo 3 was released. The PS3 also did well, and has increased its hardware sales for 11 consecutive months.

Compared to 2009, the industry is down 9-percent compared to 2009, but the NPD Group’s Anita Frazier is confident that 2010 will still end on a high note.

“Looking at historical seasonality for the industry, total year U.S. revenues (of new physical sales) could come in anywhere between $18 and $21 billion,” Frazier said. “Given the strong slate of content still to come, and the release of the Move and Kinect controllers, which I believe will spark additional interest in gaming, I think we could see the total year new physical retail sales come in at $20B. We’ll also be reporting consumer reported sales of digitally distributed, rental and used games content to provide insight into those non-POS sources of game sales.”

In terms of actual sales figures, the Xbox 360 was the top selling console with 451.7K units sold, the Wii was second with 422.5K consoles sold, and the PS3 sold 304.8K. On the portable side, even with the 3DS looming, the DS killed it with 510.7K units sold, while the PSP sold 121K units.

This is your last chance to get some heavily discounted Xbox 360 games

Microsoft announced last year that it would be shutting down the Xbox 360 Marketplace at the end of July, but it's not over just yet. Xbox is running a massive fire sale on a number of games, with some going as low as $1.

Players won't be able to purchase any products through the storefront after it goes offline on July 29. While you can still download and play games you already own, you won't be able to watch movies or TV since the Movies & TV app will also stop working on that date. That means now is your last chance to fill up your library.

One of my favorite 2023 hidden gem video games is on sale for Prime Day
Robocop getting out of a car.

Licensed games tend to have a bad reputation unless they are large-scale AAA games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. But when a developer who is very passionate about a franchise gets their hands on a beloved franchise and adapts it into video game form faithfully, the results can be surprisingly good. One of the latest examples of this is RoboCop: Rogue City from Teyon and Nacon.

Released in November 2023, the PlayStation 5 version of  is being discounted by 18% to $49 during Amazon Prime Day 2024. If you're a fan of the classic RoboCop films from the 1980s, but haven't given this game a shot, you have more reason to do do than ever. While it's not the best first-person shooter game out there, it's unabashedly in love with RoboCop and oozes reverence for the franchise in everything it does.

This 4-year-old PlayStation game is topping the sales charts

Mat Piscatella, executive director of games at consumer tracking firm Circana, posted his monthly analysis of games sales on Monday for May 2024. His findings show that spending on video games and hardware are down 6% compared to May of last year, but overall year-to-date spending is 2% higher. So video game sales are generally stagnant, trending downward.

However, there is some good news here for PlayStation. Ghost of Tsushima, which came out on May 16 for PC, hit the top spot on the top-selling games chart, beating other new releases like Homeworld 3 (at No. 14) and F1 24 (at No. 18). Other Sony games in the top 20 include Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
