Capcom and Namco to Release Street Fighter vs Tekken Games

Last week at ComicCon, Capcom surprised its fans by announcing that a new project with rival publisher Namco was underway. A new game will incorporate the two biggest fighting franchises in the world, with bragging rights up for grabs.  There will be two games released, one of which Street Fighter X Tekken, will incorporate the franchises by bringing Tekken into the Street Fighter world, in terms of gameplay, while Tekken X Street Fighter will bring Street Fighter characters into the Tekken style of play.  No word yet on when the games might hit the consoles, but mid to late 2011 at the earliest seems likely.

This will mark the second fighting collaboration between the publishers following 2005’s Namco X Capcom. Capcom has done well with this style of partnership. SNK vs. Capcom and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars both were hits, and the Marvel vs. Capcom fighting series are best-sellers. A third entry, Marvel Vs. Capcom: Fate of Two Worlds is due out in spring of 2011.

Beyond the short trailer, details are still few and far between on this game. LA News Monitor is reporting that the game will present two separate takes on the game, one from the Street Fighter point of view, the other from the Tekken side. How that plays out won’t become clear for quite awhile. The game will be released on PS3 and Xbox 360.

If you want to up your Tekken 8 game, try this stickless controller
Kuma hitting Law causing him to fly toward the screen in Tekken 8.

With the release of Tekken 8, I’ve been at a bit of a crossroads. I had no clue what controller I wanted to use to learn and beat the rest of the competition. A standard Xbox controller? PlayStation’s DualSense? A fightstick? Or maybe it's time I looked to the future and tried out a hitbox controller? That last option is the one I'd ultimately go with, thanks to the Razer Kitsune.

Released last year, the Razer Kitsune is a hitbox-style fighting gamepad with no joystick. Its selling point is that it is sleeker than most hitbox controllers on the market and features high-quality buttons. It's a great option for those who love that style of control, but don't love carrying around a big, boxy gamepad. The true question, though, was whether or not I would prefer it over a classic gamepad, my Tekken comfort zone. I decided to take on a fighting game gauntlet with a day of matches with my little brother in just about every fighter I own to find out.
What is a hitbox controller?
A hitbox controller is a stickless arcade pad. It retains all the classic attack buttons but replaces the directional stick with buttons. I would compare it to playing on a keyboard but with more comfortable buttons to press and the up button placed where your thumbs rest. You may have heard of it a few times due to the controversy it causes in the fighting game community over it being the “easy way” to play fighting games.

The Evo grand finals arena packed with a crowd of attendees.

For decades now, the Evolution Championship Series (known as Evo for short) has been known as the biggest event in the fighting game community. Since 1996, players from across the globe have gathered in Las Vegas for a chance to prove themselves on a global stage. And 2023’s Evo was no different in that aspect, but where it does differ is the management, ownership, and love of the game.
