Fans gear up for Halo Reach launch

Microsoft and game studio Bungie are on the edges of their seats—and they hope fans are too—for the latest installment in their Halo video game franchise: Halo Reach is scheduled to go on sale at selected retailers tonight at midnight, with special events planned for Stockholm, Oslo, London, New York, and Seattle.

“When it comes to the size and scope of a franchise and especially the dedication of the fans, no game is bigger than ‘Halo,'” said Microsoft Game Studios corporate VP Phil Spencer, in a statement. “With Halo: Reach, we’re delivering on our promise to redefine blockbuster entertainment experiences and ultimately help make this year the biggest ever in Xbox history.”

For London, Microsoft is promising a life Sparton soldier will touch down at the launch event via jetpack; the New York event will be at the best Buy Theater in Times Square and feature a performance by hip-hop artist Kid Cudi; the event will also be broadcast live on Spike TV.

As is typical for a major Halo launch, Microsoft is milking the release to the hilt: the game (available exclusively for the Xbox 360) will available in Standard, Limited, and Legendary Editions, and the company will be marketing Halo-themed consoles and accessories. Fans who buy a game at North American retail stores on launch day will also get a token to get an exclusive in-game Spartan Recon Helmet, thus identifying themselves in-game as customers who bought the game right out of the gate.

Pre-sale data for Halo Reach indicates the title should be another cash cow for Bungie and Microsoft: the games’ three editions already have the top three slots of Amazon’s top-selling game titles nailed down. The fourth position on that list is Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Halo Reach bundle.

Halo Reach is a prequel to the original Halo game, and focuses on a group of futuristic Spartan soldiers—Noble Team—as they make their last stand on the planet Reach.

Bobby Kotick leaves Activation Blizzard next week amid Xbox shake ups
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick.

An internal memo from Microsoft confirmed that Bobby Kotick, the controversial CEO of Activision Blizzard, will leave the company on December 29.

Bobby Kotick has been CEO of Activision Blizzard -- the company behind popular game franchises like Call of Duty, Candy Crush, Crash Bandicoot, and Diablo -- since 1991 and is one of the most derided executives in the video game industry. Workplace conditions at companies owned by Activision Blizzard were problematic during his reign, with this all coming to a head in a 2021 lawsuit that exposed lots of misconduct, some of which allegedly applied to Kotick. He's stayed with the company through all that and is now leaving following Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

The best Xbox Series X exclusives
Master Chief meeting the Weapon in Halo Infinite.

Microsoft's latest console, the Xbox Series X, is a powerhouse, oftentimes matching or outperforming the PlayStation 5 in multiplatform releases. But how are the exclusives? The Xbox Series X had a thin lineup at launch, but over the years has amassed a more than impressive catalogue of titles.

We will only include Xbox One games if they've been optimized for Series X and S (like Gears 5). Also, we're ignoring PCs entirely. If you factor in PC releases, Microsoft hasn't had a console-exclusive game in years. While many exciting games are still to come, such as Fable and Hellblade 2, there are more than enough to keep you satisfied until then.

Rebuild your own nostalgia with this detailed Xbox 360 toy set
xbox 360 mega building set replica

Although Microsoft is shutting down the Xbox 360 Store next year and definitely wants you to pick up its newest console for Starfield, it has still found a new way to appeal to the nostalgia of Xbox 360 players. It's doing so through the new Mega Showcase Microsoft Xbox 360 Collector Building Set, which will be available this October.

This set will be available starting on October 8 and will cost you $150 dollars; that said, you'll only be able to pick one up at Target. Mega makes Lego-like replica models of things for people to build, and this one is intricately designed to look like the launch version of Xbox 360. It's at 3:4 scale and made up of 1342 pieces. With it, players can build a version of the Xbox 360, a controller, and a case and disc for Halo 3. Even the packaging it comes in looks like the boxes Xbox 360 consoles came in at release.
Once built, this model will actually have working lights and a disc drive, as well as a hard drive and side shell panels that are removable. It obviously won't be able to play actual Xbox 360 games, but it still looks like a faithful recreation of Microsoft's classic game console. This is far from the first time we've seen video games and their consoles branch over into the work of buildable toys, as Nintendo patterned with Lego to create various Mario sets as well as a replica NES.
The Mega Showcase Microsoft Xbox 360 Collector Building Set releases exclusively at Target on October 8.
