Apple holding special Mac event October 20

After a year in which Apple has focused almost exclusively on its mobile platform, the company looks like it’s getting ready to turn its attention back to the Macintosh and its Mac OS X operating system: Apple has sent invitations to a special event October 20 at Apple’s campus in Cupertino.

Although the invitations aren’t very specific, it’s reasonable to assume the event will focus on Mac OS X and possibly new Macintosh hardware. The invitations include the text “Back to the Mac,” and promise a look at the “next major version of Mac OS X.” The invitations also feature a lion looking out from behind a swiveled Apple logo. The graphic implies the next major version of Mac OS X—presumably 10.7—will be codenamed “Lion.” Apple has named all major released of Mac OS X after large cats; Mac OS X 10.6 is “Snow Leopard,” which followed “Leopard” and “Tiger.”

The event will come none to soon for Macintosh enthusiasts, who have increasingly been seeing the Mac platform take a back seat to Apple’s mobile efforts, including the iPhone, iPod touch, and the iPad. This year’s Worldwide Developer Conference focused almost exclusively on Apple’s mobile platform, with barely any developer conference sessions on Apple’s core Mac OS X platform.

14 years later, the Mac mini has finally been reborn
Someone holding a new Mac mini in their hand.

Apple's big week of Mac announcements continued this morning with the unveiling of the M4 Mac mini, featuring a new chip, a revamped design, and some important hardware changes. Importantly, it marks the first time the Mac mini has seen a major redesign since the unibody model launched in 2010.

The footprint is now just 5 by 5 inches, taking up less than half the space on your desk. To be fair, it's slightly taller now at two inches (up from 1.4 inches), a bit like a shrunken down Mac Studio, which is 7.7 by 7.7 inches. The new Mac mini is also significantly lighter at just a pound and a half. The previous Mac mini weighed 2.6 pounds.

Just prior to Apple unveiling the new Mac mini in a special announcement this week, Amazon appears to have accidentally spilled the beans.

Spotted by MacRumors on Monday, the new listing on Amazon’s U.S. website for the just-unveiled M4 iMac includes a section titled “Which Mac is right for you?”

Apple has brought its M4 chip to the iMac, making it the first Mac to get Apple’s latest silicon chip. The update also brings new colors and a significant performance improvement for the all-in-one desktop computer, and it comes a year after it received the previous-generation M3 chip. As with the previous M1 and M3 iMacs, the M4 model is compatible with Apple Intelligence.

It comes at the beginning of a week of product releases from Apple, with the company previously teasing that it had much more to reveal in the coming days. The updates could see the entire Mac lineup receive some variant of the M4 chip (including more powerful M4 Pro, M4 Max and M4 Ultra editions) over the coming months.
