Lenovo IdeaPad U260 ultraportable packs Intel Core i7

Computer maker Lenovo has decided it won’t let the ultraportable market slide away this holiday season, announcing the IdeaPad U260, what it’s calling the “world’ first” ultraportable notebook computer with a 12.5-inch display. The IdeaPad U260 is just under half an inch thick, and features a U-shaped profile that Lenovo says is inspired by the look and feel of a classic leather-bound notebook.

“The U260 is a design one can truly touch and feel that showcases the extreme attention our team places in every aspect of design, from mechanical to human interaction to color, material and finish,” said the VP of Lenovo’s Innovation Design Center Yingjia Yao, in a statement. “Our philosophy is that Idea product design should be simple, unique and provide value, and the IdeaPad U260 delivers just that through the high-quality selection of materials, advanced ergonomics and a signature design concept.”

The IdeaPad U260 features a one-piece seamless exterior cover and a black leather-patterned palm rest for a luxury look. The U260 features a 12.5-inch 1,366 by 768-pixel LCD display driven by Intel HD Graphics along with either HDD or SSD storage options (up to 320 and 128 GB, respectively). The system will support up to 4 GB of RAM, and can be powered by up to a 1.46 GHz ULV version of an Intel Core i7 processor—Pentium Core i3, and Core i5 CPUs will also be available. The system also features HDMI output for connecting to an HDTV, along with VGA output, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networking, gigabit Ethernet an integrated VGA webcam for video chat, 2 USB 2.0 ports, Dolby Advanced Audio surround sound speakers, and a glass multitouch trackpad. To help with cooling, the U260 also integrates a “Breathable Keyboard,” utilizing an Intel Advanced Cooling Technology that enables heat to escape through the keyboard (and potentially warm those fingertips on cold winter nights) while maintaining spill resistance.

Lenovo says the IdeaPad U260 is available today at prices starting at $899, with mocha and “clementine orange” case colors.

We tested the IdeaPad Slim 7 with Intel and AMD CPUs, and found a clear winner
Lenovo IdeaPad S940 review

AMD released its Ryzen 4000 series laptop CPUs to enormous success, producing some of the best-performing laptops you can buy today without jumping to Intel's 45-watt processors. Many of the best examples of Ryzen-based laptops have been low-priced machines, and one of our favorites so far has been the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7.

I recently received an Intel version of the IdeaPad Slim 7. It's identical to the AMD version in its chassis, display, keyboard and touchpad, and everything else that's not tied to the chipset. The difference is that while the AMD version runs with a 25-watt, eight-core Ryzen 7 4800U CPU, the Intel version I'm comparing is equipped with a 10th-gen, quad-core Intel Core i5-1035G1 CPU, and an Nvidia GeForce MX350 discrete GPU.
Price -- A question of value
Pitting a lowly Core i5 against the mighty Ryzen 4000 -- especially this one -- isn't quite apples to apples. The Ryzen we received is at the top of AMD's product line for mobile, while the Intel chip is mid-range.

Trying to buy a GPU in 2023 almost makes me miss the shortage
Two AMD Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards on a pink surface.

The days of the GPU shortage are long over, but somehow, buying a GPU is harder than ever -- and that sentiment has very little to do with stock levels. It's just that there are no obvious candidates when shopping anymore.

In a generation where no single GPU stands out as the single best graphics card, it's hard to jump on board with the latest from AMD and Nvidia. I don't want to see another GPU shortage, but the state of the graphics card market is far from where it should be.
This generation is all over the place
