Elden Ring closed network test: What is it and how to play

Fans of the Dark Souls games, or FromSoftware in general, have been eagerly awaiting the newest game from the studio. Originally planned to be released in January, we learned that Elden Ring would be pushed back to February 25. To make this news a little more palatable, the announcement was coupled with the news that players would be able to sign up for a closed-network test of the game, allowing us a chance to play the game early. As for the reason for the game’s delay, FromSoftware says, “The depth and strategic freedom of the game exceeded initial expectations. Thank you for your trust and patience.” While a delay is never fun, it does appear that the reason, as well as news of this test, will result in a more polished final product.

You’re probably wondering what the details of this closed network test are. Who can participate? When is it being held? How do I register? Thankfully, all those details have been made available right alongside the announcement of the test itself. If you’re interested in registering for a chance at getting an early look at the world of Elden Ring, here’s everything you need to know about how to play the beta.

How to register for the closed network test, and when it will run

To register for a chance at participating in the closed network test, all you need to do is head over to the official Bandai website and sign up. In order to be eligible, you will need a few things. First, you need to be at least 17 years old. Second, this is a console-only test, so you will need to have either a PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X or S and access to the internet.  You will need an email to register, and that’s where the code will be sent if you are selected. Finally, there will be a questionnaire post-test that you will be required to fill out. They also ask which FromSoftware games you’re familiar with, such as the Souls series, Bloodborne, and even their Armored Core games. It’s unclear how your choices here will impact your chances of being picked.

Make sure you register before November 1. This is when registration closes and no more people can enter to be selected to test. Those selected will be done at random, so as long as you register in time, you will have an equal chance of getting picked.

As for when the test itself will run, there are five planned sessions between November 12 and 14. These are:

  1. November 12 between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. PT
  2. November 12 between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. PT
  3. November 13 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. PT
  4. November 14 between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. PT
  5. November 15 between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. PT

While you don’t need to be able to play during all these times, they do appreciate it if you could play during as much of the testing periods as possible.

Also, for all you streamers out there, you will not be permitted to livestream the game.

What is a closed network test?

A giant battle in Elden Ring.

A network test is essentially a test to see how the game’s online functionality holds up. They are doing this to gather data and uncover problems that can be fixed prior to the game coming out. What that means for you is that this is not a finished build of Elden Ring. They specifically state that they are limiting the content available in the test, and some technical specifications will be different, too.

But, being a network test, they did state that console-specific cross-play would be available. That means players on PS4 and PS5 can play together to some capacity, as well as Xbox One and Series X or S players, but not PlayStation and Xbox players.

According to the site, those selected will get to play the opening segment of the game, so there should be no risk of spoilers.

Elden Ring’s first significant post-launch content is a PvP Colosseum
Four players fight in an Elden Ring colosseum.

Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware have confirmed that multiple PvP Colosseums will be added to Elden Ring as part of an update on December 7.
Although Elden Ring is the best-selling and most critically acclaimed game of 2022, its post-launch patches have primarily been focused on balance tweaks and bug fixes. Update 1.08, which drops on December 7, changes that by adding a new way for players to duel each other. Colosseums will now appear in Limgrave, Leyndell, and Caelid, where players can face off against each other. There will be three match types: 1v1 duels, 3v3 team fights, and free-for-alls where only one player can come out on top.
The update will be free to Elden Ring owners across all platforms, and a new trailer gives us a look at these new arenas and the fights that take place within them.
ELDEN RING | Free Colosseum Update Trailer
The Colosseums look like fun places for players to test new character builds, show their builds off to others, and test their skills against really experienced players. It seems like this is strictly PvP-focused content though, so players yearning for more single-player content of DLC won't be satiated just yet. Still, this is one of our first very clear indications that FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment are interested in adding significant, brand-new content to Elden Ring, which is a good sign.
Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Colosseums will be added as part of Elden Ring Update 1.08, which is set to release on December 7.

Dark Souls Remastered PC servers are back online for the first time since January
A player looks at messages in Dark Souls.

Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware have finally restored online functionality for Dark Souls Remastered on PC today. The game's PC servers have been offline since January of this year when a dangerous exploit was discovered.
The PC versions of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls 3 had a remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability, which in the worst cases could potentially allow someone to take control of another Dark Souls player's PC. To prevent that from happening, Bandai Namco and FromSoftware shut down online servers for all four games on January 23. A statement a couple of weeks later claimed that "online services for the Dark Souls series on PC will not resume until after the release of Elden Ring," but the wait ended up being much longer than expected.
Dark Souls 3 servers weren't back online until August, over seven months after the initial shutdown, while Dark Souls 2's online functionality wasn't restored until October. Now, Dark Souls Remastered's online features are finally live again, so PC players can leave messages, summon their friends, or invade other players' worlds again. Unfortunately, one version of the original Dark Souls on PC won't get its online features back.

In October, Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware confirmed that online functionality for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (the original PC release) will never be restored. "We have determined that we will not be able to support online services for the PC version of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition that was released in 2012, due to an aging system," a tweet explains. "We apologize for the long wait and ask for your understanding in this matter. Our sincere thanks to the people who have been playing Dark Souls since its launch."
Regardless, Dark Souls fans can take solace in the fact that the wait is finally over, and versions of all 3 Dark Souls games can be played online on PC again.

General Radahn stands against a red background in Elden Ring.

Sony and Tencent have purchased a combined 30.34% of FromSoftware shares, with Sony now holding a 14.09% stake in the studio.

While not an outright acquisition, FromSoftware has been a studio many speculated would be ripe for acquisition by a major company. The studio has been on the rise in popularity thanks to its Souls series, with each game performing better than the last commercially. Its latest game, Elden Ring, is the top-selling game of 2022 so far and one of the top 10 bestselling premium games of all time in the U.S.
