Samsung to unveil world’s ‘thinnest’ Blu-ray player at CES

Girth isn’t a typical consideration by which to judge a Blu-ray player. Nonetheless, Samsung has announced that it will be unveiling the “thinnest Blu-ray player in the world” at next week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Not much is known about the device’s core features aside from the fact that it is just under an inch thick (23mm) and will be able to convert conventional 2D images into “quasi-3D” images, according to PC World.

It’s also expected that the device will allow for wall mounting and be Internet-ready with support for Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc.

Samsung’s quest for having the slenderest of the slender when it comes Blu-ray players is not a recent development. The Korean company released a 39mm player in 2009 that seems positively obese when compared to the 29mm model it touted in 2010. And next year’s model looks to achieve supermodel proportions coming in at just 23mm. The company is also known for scant proportions when it comes to TVs, as well.

There’s no word yet on when the player will be released or how much it will cost. But Samsung did repeatedly emphasize that this is going to be a very thin Blu-ray player, in case you missed that the first time around.

Samsung microLED TV 2023.

While almost all of the buzz in TV land in 2022 was related to the launch of the first-ever QD-OLED TVs from Sony and Samsung, it looks like 2023 will be the year that some folks begin seriously considering a TV based on microLED tech. At least, that's Samsung's clear hope now that the company has debuted the world's first 76-inch model, the Micro LED CX. The company announced the new model at CES 2023 and said it will be its smallest and most affordable microLED TV to date.

The 76-inch model isn't the only microLED in Samsung's lineup. The company says it will offer these TVs in 50-, 63-, 89-, 101-, 114- and 140-inch versions in 2023.

Samsung QD Display lq.

The TV business is a tricky one. The business of a tech journalist covering TVs? It's trickier still. Case in point: In the midst of Samsung's other CES releases, Samsung snuck a brand-new TV technology into CES 2022 right under my nose. I'm supposed to know about this stuff ahead of time.

So what is this new TV? What is QD-OLED? What is QD-Display? And how in the world did Samsung pull a fast one on me? The answer is part tech and part inside baseball -- but all of it is important.
