T-Mobile is giving its customers a year of Paramount+ for free

T-Mobile and Paramount+ today announced that the wireless network operator is giving its customers a free year of the streaming service. The promotion — which gets you the basic $5-a-month Paramount+ subscription — begins November 9, and you’ll need to be on a postpaid T-Mobile consumer plan, a T-Mobile home internet plan, or a legacy Sprint plan. And it’s good for current Paramount+ subscribers, as well as if you’re just signing up for the first time. After 12 months of service, you’ll start to pay that $5-a-month subscription via your T-Mobile account.

“The partnership with T-Mobile is a key part to our growth strategy as we continue to scale Paramount+ to become a global leader in streaming,” Jeff Shultz, chief strategy officer and chief business development officer of ViacomCBS Streaming, said in a press release. “This incredible offer is available to T-Mobile’s full suite of postpaid consumers, exposing Paramount+ to a massive new and diverse audience that will have the opportunity to experience the service’s unmatched content portfolio and unique value proposition as a total household product.”

The basic Paramount+ plan gets you access to most everything on the streaming service, including nearly the entire Star Trek universe. That includes new originals like Star Trek: Discovery, which is about to kick off its fifth season, as well as Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Prodigy and the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Paramount+ also is home to the expanding Yellowstone universe. Season 4 of the tentpole series is about to premiere, as is one of the first spinoffs, Mayor of Kingstown, starring Jeremy Renner.

Paramount+ also is home to all kinds of live sports, including Champions League soccer and the National Women’s Soccer League. You’re also able to watch your regional NFL games live.

It’s important to note a couple things about the basic Paramount+ plan. First is that it includes advertising in the on-demand content. And second is that it doesn’t include a live feed of your local CBS affiliate (that won’t affect your ability to watch NFL games, though). The “Premium” plan fixes all that for $10 a month and throws in the ability to watch some content in 4K resolution on supported devices, which include Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV 4K.

And if you’re a Premium subscriber, you won’t get a $5 credit if you sign up for this promotion. It’s for the basic “Essential” plan only.

To get the free year of basic Paramount+, visit the T-Mobile website and connect your account starting November 9. In addition to this Paramount+ promotion, T-Mobile also offers its customers breaks on Netflix and Apple TV+ subscriptions.

T-Mobile adding a free year of Apple TV+ to its most expensive plans
Apple TV icon on Apple TV.

T-Mobile today announced that it's giving subscribers to its most expensive mobile plan a free subscription to Apple TV+, which normally costs $60 a year. Those who are subscribed to the Magenta Max plan — which costs $85 a month for a single line — will get Apple's streaming service for free. If you've got T-Mobile's Magenta plan, which costs $70 a month for one line, you'll get six months of Apple TV+ for free.

The perk takes effect on August 31, 2022, and it's good for the foreseeable future. (A previous version of this story stated it was just for one year, but that's legacy copy on T-Mobile's website for the old perk that's being supplanted.)

You’ll soon be able to subscribe to Paramount+ from The Roku Channel
The Roku Channel on a Roku TV./

If, after reading this, you feel like you've got a bit of Inception, you're not alone. Roku has announced that you'll be able to subscribe to the Paramount+ streaming service later this month from within The Roku Channel. It'll still cost exactly the same — $5 a month for the version with ads, or $10 a month if you want to get rid of most ads.

Why do this, instead of just having a separate subscription and its own channel (which is what Roku basically calls apps) on Roku? In addition to letting Roku manage the billing, you'll get the Paramount+ content right alongside everything else that's tucked into The Roku Channel, which also is available on Amazon Fire TV, Samsung smart TVs, and in a web browser. It's another way to make The Roku Channel (and the ads Roku sells for it) a premium destination on the biggest streaming platform in the United States, and it's bringing what's new on Paramount+ with it.

Paramount+ adds Live Channels for ‘effortless’ entertainment
Paramount+ SpongeBob Universe Live Channel.

What could be easier than firing up your favorite streaming video service and picking something to watch? According to Paramount+, the answer is a new collection of so-called "live" channels based on Paramount's most popular entertainment properties. The feature, called Live Channels, launches on December 9 and includes more than 15 linear streaming channels like Star Trek, Survivor, and SpongeBob Universe.

“Even in the era of on-demand, there is clearly a strong consumer appetite for reimagined linear channels that provide effortless, lean-back entertainment,” said Tom Ryan, president and CEO of ViacomCBS Streaming, in a press release.
