The best gifts for Nintendo Switch owners

The Nintendo Switch has had an incredible year. The system continues to remain popular four years after its launch, with flagship titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons driving consistent sales. The COVID-19 pandemic also encouraged many people to turn to gaming as a safe indoor activity to pass the time. As a result, the number of Switch owners is larger than ever, and you may well have one on your holiday gift list. We’ve rounded up the best accessories, toys, and other goodies to give to the Switch devotee in your life this year.

Hori has been making a variety of Switch accessories since the console’s release. The Split Pad Pro might be its best effort, particularly if you have large hands or if you find your fingers feel uncomfortable after long playing sessions in the Switch’s handheld mode. These officially licensed Joy-Con replacements are not only cheaper than actual Joy-Cons, but more ergonomic and comfortable to hold, too. They’re based on the Switch Pro controller, which itself feels more akin to an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 controller. The description boasts that the Split Pad Pro gives the “full-size controller experience in handheld mode” and includes assignable rear triggers for more comfortable button mapping. It comes in a variety of colors and patterns.

The official Nintendo Joy-Con charging dock is a must for fans who love their Joy-Cons. Nintendo’s small, motion control-capable controllers are essential for games like Ring Fit Adventure or any title where moving around and shaking things up is necessary. This dock plugs directly into the Switch via USB, meaning it doesn’t need its own outlet, and can charge up to four Joy-Cons at once. While it might not be the flashiest or most fun item on this list, it’s a must-have accessory for every player.

Game and Watch: The Legend of Zelda – $50

Following the success of the Super Mario Bros. Game and Watch, Nintendo is now releasing one based on the classic Legend of Zelda series. The Legend of Zelda Game and Watch is a small, self-contained handheld that comes with a handful of preinstalled games. This system contains the original The Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, a trio of classic Zelda games from Nintendo’s early days. It also includes an old Game and Watch game, Vermin, with Link as the protagonist. There’s no Wi-Fi or downloads needed: The system is ready to play from the get-go. The Game and Watch is a great way to introduce younger Nintendo fans to the classics of yesteryear.

The Lego page promises that the buildable set is full of “hidden game references and surprises for fans.” The full build clocks in at a whopping 2,064 pieces, which should be more than enough to keep any aspiring builder or engineer busy for quite a while. The set is currently on back-order, but it can still be purchased.

Not only do they look great on a desk or a collector’s shelf, but they also grant im-game bonuses. Placing either of the Amiibo on the NFC-compatible Switch will grant players power-ups and bonuses in Metroid Dread that can be used once a day. It’s a great way for fans to enhance their play and have something cool to show off to friends and family.

If you’re getting your loved one the Joy-Con charging dock we mentioned, why not get them a pair of fancy new Joy-Cons, too? This gorgeous controller set, made to celebrate the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD earlier this year, is great for Zelda fans of all types. These controllers are an especially good choice for fans whose Joy-Cons have fallen victim to the dreaded drift or have otherwise worn out. They even come with fancy braided straps to make sure no one puts a hole in Grandma’s TV while playing a little too vigorously.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder has some of Nintendo’s best online features
Wiggler in Super Mario Bros. Wonder

When it comes to multiplayer integration, Nintendo can be wildly unpredictable. Unstable online servers and disappointing co-op experiences built for young players can leave its games lacking. Thankfully, that's not the case with Super Mario Bros. Wonder. In fact, the new 2D adventure might just contain the best Nintendo multiplayer experience on the Switch next to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

At any point while playing Super Mario Bros. Wonder, players can bring their game online with the press of a button in the main menu. Doing so will unlock several multiplayer features at once. For one, there's traditional online multiplayer. Simply press a button to "play with friends" and you'll be able to explore both the overworld and levels co-operatively. Like the New Super Mario Bros. series, four players can work together to complete levels (which can be very hectic fun).

Play these 3DS and Wii U games before Nintendo shutters their online features
Captain Falcon in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

In April 2024, Nintendo will discontinue online services across its Wii U and 3DS consoles. While the eShops for both systems were shut down in March 2023, this will remove the online functionality of many apps and games, making gaming on either of these platforms an almost entirely offline experience. As a result, many games on those systems will lose important features and never be quite the same to play afterward. So, you'll need to get some gaming time in by next April if you want to refresh and preserve the memories of playing online on these two underdog Nintendo platforms.
While the aforementioned eShop closures make it impossible to buy new games digitally, plenty of games that you likely already own physical copies of or already had downloaded have online features that won't work properly come April 2024. As such, we recommend you play the following games online before the discontinuation of those services next year.
Kid Icarus Uprising

Kid Icarus Uprising is mostly remembered for its entertaining story, charismatic characters, and odd controls, but it also features a surprisingly fun multiplayer experience in Together Mode. In multiplayer, up to six players can use powerful weapons and abilities from the main adventure in one of two modes. Free-for-all lets players loose on a map, tasking them with racking up the most kills within a set time limit. Light vs. Dark is more complex, as two teams of three face off until enough players are defeated that one respawns as an angel; when that powered-up angel is killed, the match is over.
While far from balanced, Kid Icarus Uprising's Together Mode is one of the most entertaining competitive multiplayer experiences exclusive to 3DS. It can be played locally, using bots to fill in empty spots, so thankfully it won't stop working entirely. Still, it's not easy in 2023 to come across multiple people near you who have copies of Kid Icarus Uprising and want to play. As such, check out this cult classic 3DS game's hidden gem of a mode before praying that the rumors of a remaster eventually become true.

What games will Nintendo Switch 2 launch with? We have some ideas
Mario and friends zip through a race course in Mario Kart 8.

We’re officially on “new console watch.” Reports from credible publications like Eurogamer say that Nintendo secretly showed developers its next system behind closed doors at this year’s Gamescom. While it’s only a rumor, it’s a realistic one. We’re six years into the Nintendo Switch’s lifespan and even the longest-running consoles turn over at eight. If Nintendo’s next system is one or two years away, it’s time to start lining up support from third-party developers.

We’ve speculated on features we’d want in a new system before, but the reality of a new platform has me asking another question: What games would you launch with something like this? The Nintendo Switch’s launch day was crucial to its long-term success thanks to a bonafide classic in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While the rest of its launch lineup wasn’t as impressive, Nintendo capitalized fairly quickly with titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2. If Nintendo’s going to push Switch owners over to a new system, it’ll have to roll out the big guns.
