Operation Flashpoint: Red River welcomes you to Tajikistan

The stakes are high in Codemasters’ new first-person shooter, Operation Flashpoint: Red River, but thankfully you will have some friends along to help. Built with a heavy emphasis on the idea of online co-op play with four person squads, Red River is designed around the concept of teamwork and tactics. As appealing as it is to pull a Leroy Jenkins and run out into an enemy held valley, screaming at the top of your lungs and leaving your frustrated teammates to fight a ridiculously difficult battle with enemies that know right where they are, Red River discourages that by having you die quickly and stupidly. A single well placed shot by the enemy can kill you, so being clever will generally be far more vital than being recklessly brave.

In the trailer below, the gameplay and in-game graphics are highlighted, and the idea of realism carries through. Things like sound will be a huge part of the game, and knowing your surroundings will likely be the difference between success and respawning while your teammates think up new ways to call you a noob.

The game itself takes place in Tajikistan during a fictional conflict in the Middle Eastern (or apparently Central Asian country, depending on what you read– for the record, the World Atlas lists it as both) country, where insurgents want us out. So too do the Chinese, who order the Marines to leave the country, thus creating a new global flashpoint.

Check out the trailer below and look for Operation Flashpoint: Red River on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 29, 2011.

Does Back 4 Blood support split-screen co-op play?
Back 4 Blood Cleaners in a group.

The entire premise that Back 4 Blood is based on centers around teaming up with three friends to try and survive the relentless, and seemingly endless, onslaught of Ridden. Obviously building off of the formula established with the two Left 4 Dead titles, this is a game where half the fun comes from how you and your friends respond to the unpredictable nature of the game. While there technically is a solo mode, it is heavily disincentivized compared to playing with other people. Even playing with bots is pushed as a better secondary option compared to going it alone.

That's all well and good, but what about players who want to squad up for some split-screen local co-op zombie shooting action? The Left 4 Dead games were some of the best couch co-op experiences of their day, and while the standard of games having split-screen has been slowly disappearing, many are wondering if Back 4 Blood will allow us to play with our friends on the same console. Online multiplayer is a given but isn't quite the same as having a buddy sitting right there next to you while you play. If that's how you prefer to play, you're probably wondering if Back 4 Blood supports split-screen local co-op play. Now that the game is out, here's what you need to know before you rush out and grab the latest and greatest zombie shooter.

How to add cross-platform friends in Back 4 Blood
Back 4 Blood promotional art.

The team from Turtle Rock made such a strong first impression with the first Left 4 Dead that Valve brought the team under their wing to make the sequel, plus some great DLC. These games were the gold standard for cooperative zombie shooters until, well, that same team left to make Back 4 Blood. Taking advantage of the generations of improvements that have been made since Left 4 Dead 2, this modern game is still built around the simple concept of getting some friends together and shooting your way through hundreds and hundreds of zombies across a series of missions.

One thing Back 4 Blood takes advantage of that wasn't even considered possible when the Left 4 Dead games were coming out was cross-platform support. Now it is easier than ever to play with friends regardless of whether they're on Xbox, PlayStation, or PC. However, there isn't a universal system for how cross-platform play works just yet, so actually joining up with your friends for the first time isn't quite as straightforward as a simple button press. If you want to get the gang together for some zombie-slaying fun, here's how to add cross-platform friends in Back 4 Blood.

How to earn supply points in Back 4 Blood
back 4 blood how to earn supply points

While the game itself is fun enough, Back 4 Blood takes your zombie shooting adventures to a new level beyond just teaming up and running through missions. Unlike the Left 4 Dead games, to which this is an obvious spiritual successor, there now exists a form of currency that persists between your runs instead of each one starting you off from scratch. You won't be able to start off with top-tier guns or anything like that, but the Supply Points you earn will make taking on those higher-difficulty levels much more manageable.

Supply Points are necessary for unlocking the majority of the cards in Back 4 Blood. Cards, in short, are different buffs and perks you can add to your character throughout a run. Without a strong deck of cards, even the most skilled and coordinated team will have a hard time making it through the later missions, especially when the difficulty is cranked up. You'll need quite a lot of supply points to complete the collection of cards, though, and it isn't always clear what the best way to get them is. Here's the best way to earn supply points in Back 4 Blood.
