Amazon expands trade-in program to include electronics

amazon.comDo you happen to have any unwanted electronics items lying around? An old MP3 player perhaps? A GPS device? A couple of cameras you no longer use?

Well, if you do possess any gadgets that spend most of their time at the back of the closet rather than in your hand, Amazon will happily take them off you. On Wednesday, the Seattle-based company expanded its trade-in program to include thousands of electronics items. Called the “Electronics Trade-In Store,” it offers everyone the chance to trade in unwanted items for Amazon.com gift cards.

The list of items that you’re able to trade in includes tablets, cell phones, MP3 players, cameras, GPS devices and more. You can throw them (carefully) into a single box, and best of all, shipping them to Amazon will cost you nothing.

In a statement on the company’s website, Paul Ryder, vice president of Electronics for Amazon, said, “Technology is constantly evolving and newer, better versions of consumer electronics are introduced all the time.” He continued: “We want to give customers the opportunity to get great value from their used electronics. Hundreds of thousands of customers have already received millions of dollars in gift cards from the other products in our program. The Electronics category is a natural extension and we are delighted to offer our customers more trade-in options.”

It doesn’t matter where you bought the item from, whether it was from the site itself, a local store or even a friend. What you need to do first is search the trade-in store to see if they’re offering something for the item you want to trade in. If your luck’s in, simply click the Trade-In button to add the item to your trade-in shipment.

“Amazon’s Trade-In program offers a variety of condition types including ‘Like New,’ ‘Good’ and ‘Acceptable,’ giving customers an easy way to view multiple trade-in values,” the company explains on its website.

Once you’re done, you can ship it to Amazon for free. Once an employee has inspected and evaluated the goods, an Amazon Gift Card will be deposited into your account “generally in less than 48 hours.”

So what can you expect for your old items? Well, at the time of writing, Amazon were offering up to $143.25 for an Apple iPod touch 32GB (4th generation). For a 3G iPod with 32GB you’re looking at up to $113. For any iPad owners who upgraded to the iPad 2 recently, you can expect up to $340.75 for your old 64GB Wi-Fi model. As for cameras, if you have a Lumix DMC-LX3 which is in good condition, you might be offered up to $147.

Amazon’s Trade-In store also includes items such as textbooks, computer games and TV/movie DVDs.
