Sony is betting on 3D in spaces smaller than a McMansion’s living room with its forthcoming 3D Display for its PlayStation 3 gaming console, but the company is taking its bet on 3D technology to all-in-one desktop PCs, introducing its new Vaio L-series. The Vaio L’s will feature a 24-inch 3D capable display that not only serves as a first-class monitor for surfing the Web and traditional applications, but also doubles as a 3D-capable entertainment system, whether from Blu-ray, PC games—or a PlayStation 3 via HDMI input.
The Vaio L series will feature second-generation Intel Core processors (all the way up to quad-core Intel Core i7 CPUs), and selected models will feature discrete Nvidia graphics controllers: GeForce GT 540M with 1 GB of video RAm on the high end, or an option for GeForce 315M with 512 MB of video RAM. The 24-inch display offers full HD resolution (1,920 by 1,080 pixels)L-series systems will support up to 8 GB of ram and 1 TB of hard-drive storage, along with USB 3.0 for fast data transfer (USB 2.0 ports are also onboard), HDMI input and output, composite video input, and a high-definition webcam with Sony Exmor sensor with solid low-light performance. The systems will be available with a standard DVD±RW drive, or optional Blu-Ray players or burners. Sony will also offer an optional NTSC/ATSC TV tuner.
The Vaio L series has controls built discretely into the edge of the bezel, and sports S-Force 3D front surround technology for immersive audio.
Sony expects the L-series all-in-ones will go on sale July 13 at prices starting at about $1,420. Pre-orders are available now; the systems will be available in white or black.
