Yes, this is real: A Wonder Twins movie is coming to HBO Max

Modern comic book movie fans may not be familiar with the Wonder Twins, Zan and Jayna. However, that could soon change in a major way. The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that HBO Max is producing a new live-action Wonder Twins original movie. And this will be the twins’ most significant project in their 45 years of history.

Older fans may remember that Zan and Jayna made their debut in 1977 as the teenage sidekicks of DC’s animated heroes in The All-New Super Friends Hour. Essentially, they were audience surrogate characters who tended to get in a lot of trouble alongside their wacky space monkey, Gleek. The twins are alien siblings from the planet Exxor who have shape-shifting powers that can only be activated when they make physical contact with each other. Zan’s powers are limited to assuming the form of a liquid, while Jayna has more variety with her ability to assume the form of any animal.

Zan and Jayna are the Wonder

The Wonder Twins aren’t exactly headlining characters in the comics, and the Super Friends animated series left them with a bad reputation among some viewers. The only animated project they’ve starred in by themselves was The New Adventures of the Wonder Twins, a series of animated web shorts for Adult Swim. However, those shorts made the Wonder Twins the butt of its jokes. And as you can see below, they’ll need some image rehab to get modern audiences to accept them as stars.

That Herculean duty will fall upon Adam Sztykiel, a first-time director who has been hired to write and helm the Wonder Twins movie. While Sztykiel has no directing credits on his resume, he co-wrote the upcoming Black Adam film (just one of 4 DC films set for release in 2022), and contributed to Scoob!, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, and Due Date.

In July, Max is moving forward from past hits like The Last of Us and controversial shows like The Idol to a period where original documentaries and political thrillers dominate the schedule.

Max's July 2023 schedule promises to keep the HBO tradition of quality programming alive with a bevy of new releases that include the limited series Full Circle from director Steven Soderbergh. In addition, there will be the anticipated debut of the original documentary Golden Boy, a Project Greenlight reboot, something called Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, and Shark Week. Who should be the next Wonder Woman?
Wonder Woman leaping and smiling in DC Comics.

The DC Universe is trying to stay afloat amid an increasingly competitive entertainment landscape. The franchise's current installment, the long-delayed and controversial The Flash, premiered on June 16 to indifferent fan reaction and mediocre box office. New DC honcho James Gunn is deep in preproduction on his much-anticipated Superman movie, while Flash director Andy Muschietti will seemingly direct the upcoming Batman movie The Brave and the Bold. Overall, things in the ever-struggling DC corner seem to be moving along.

However, one-third of the DC Trinity remains a question mark. Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman is nowhere to be found in any of the studio's upcoming projects. The Israeli actress received acclaim for her take on Wonder Woman, with many considering her one of the few bright spots in the DCEU. However, Wonder Woman 1984 was a major disappointment, and Gunn's plan to do a quasi-reboot on the DC Universe has led many to guess Gadot is out, much like Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. That suspicion was recently confirmed by the actress herself in an Instagram post that expressed her desire to move forward as an "actress-for-hire."

How to watch the DC movies in order
Barry Allen in the Flash suit looking to the distance in The Flash.

DC movies are in a weird place right now. Four of the DC Extended Universe films are being released this year, and two of them, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash, have already hit theaters. What makes it strange is that the DCEU as we know it is going to come to an end with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in December 2023. In 2025, James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios films will start the new DC Universe with Superman: Legacy, which will be a true fresh start for the franchise.

Where does that leave fans of the DCEU? All of those DC movies are still on Max (formerly HBO), and those films aren't going anywhere unless Warner Bros. Discovery really wants another huge tax break. That means you can watch any and all of them at a moment's notice, except for The Flash which has only just hit theaters. As for the rest, you have two options to watch them in order: Chronologically or by release date. And in this post, we'll give you the correct order for both.
