It was recently revealed that Apple could launch two new Macs at its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. Now, one of those mystery Macs might have been revealed as a new version of the Mac Mini.

The information comes from well-known developer Steve Troughton-Smith, who tweeted that the latest firmware for Apple’s Studio Display monitor contains a reference to a hitherto-unreleased Mac, specifically one called “Macmini10,1.”

The most recent Mac Mini — the M1 model launched in 2020 — comes with the model identifier “Macmini9,1.” That means the new, unreleased Mac Mini mentioned in the Studio Display firmware certainly makes sense from a naming standpoint.

As for the chip the machine will house, Troughton-Smith believes it will be Apple’s M2 instead of the M1 Pro. This has been a point of contention for a while, especially since Apple has not released a high-end version of the Mac Mini that uses an Apple Silicon chip, instead, leaving an Intel-powered model in the line-up. The M2 would be an entry-level chip, while an M1 Pro is aimed more at pro-level users.

Rumors suggest the M2 chip will be similar to the M1 but will boost the number of GPU cores to 10 from the seven or eight found in the M1 (depending on the model). As for the CPU cores, reporter Mark Gurman believes the M2 will have eight in total, just like the M1, but will weight them more toward high-performance cores. The M1’s cores are split evenly between high-performance and high-efficiency cores, but the M2 could skew that more towards the former.

As well as the M2 Mac Mini, there are claims Apple could launch an M2 Pro model alongside it, finally giving users a more powerful Mac Mini that is built on Apple Silicon. According to the rumor mill, this chip will feature a 12-core CPU (with four high-efficiency cores and eight high-performance cores). Right now, the GPU core count is unknown.

Additionally, there’s a strong chance that Apple will unveil a new MacBook Air at WWDC, which is also rumored to be outfitted with an M2 chip. Aside from the hardware, though, there are plenty more WWDC rumors swirling around what we could see. The event kicks off on June 6, so there’s plenty of time for more news to leak out ahead of the show.

Apple may have stealthily confirmed the new Mac mini

With the Apple iPhone event now behind us, we are still waiting for official news about new Macs. We recently reported on the slew of Macs that are most likely on the way, but Apple's been silent on the matter -- until now. A stealthy line of code in the new macOS Sequoia update reveals that a new Mac mini might be in the works, and the confirmation fits right in with previous reports.

Let's start with some context. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is readying a new Mac mini with the M4 and the M4 Pro chip. Aside from the chip upgrade, the 2024 Mac mini is said to be redesigned to be smaller than ever before, marking the first major change in the design of the mini PC in many years. It's said to be around the same size as an Apple TV set-top box. To that end, we've heard that Apple might remove all of the USB-A ports on the Mac mini in an effort to make the PC even thinner.

Apple’s iPhone 16 event was totally devoid of new Macs, and there were some good reasons for that. One of them is that there are expected to be so many Apple computers launching later this year that there simply wouldn’t be enough time for them all at the iPhone show. And now, a new report claims that these new Macs are just around the corner.

Writing in his weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has outlined what he expects Apple to release in a potential follow-up event this October. This includes a revamp to a wide range of popular desktop and mobile Macs. Gurman’s predictions are often on the money, so when he suggests these Macs are almost upon us, it’s worth paying attention.

MacBook Pro may make an exciting change to its RAM

According to anonymous sources cited by Bloomberg, Apple's new M4 series of Mac computers launching this year will all have at least 16GB of RAM. That's double the current minimum of 8GB for entry-level models and a level Apple has stuck to since 2012 despite plenty of criticism and many of its competitors offering a base amount of 16GB.

The information comes from the developer test logs for four new Mac models labeled "16,1," "16,2," "16,3," and "16,10." These tests check for compatibility with third-party applications and are usually done fairly close to launch. Three of the models have 10 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores, while the last has eight CPU and eight GPU cores -- but all four have either 16GB or 32GB of RAM.
